Ice & Snow—Minnesota Edition
Links to general aviation backcountry flying-oriented videos. It can be yours or stuff you find on the internet. Please no airline/military.
If you stop by the northern Minnesota BCP HQ on floats or skis, there's a good chance that 2-3 years later I'll publish a 5 minute video about it. My latest "Salvage Short," comprised of spontaneous shots on a really cold iPhone 14, features my Mainer buddy Jeremy Harmon in his flapless PA-18 making tracks in the lake powder...which sits atop fascinating layers of ice. I can't get enough of the ice. I have hours of drone footage of weird ice.

Awesome! Even though winter is less and less thrilling as I get older, I am still in awe by it's beauty and glad that it keeps some of the riff raff away.

Thanks! I feel like it's just a trailer for what could be a much grander video if I got out filming with people here during winter. But most of my footage these days is comprised of 5 minutes worth of off-the-cuff iphone footage.

Thanks for the fun video, should be sponsored by LL Bean.
Why were his wheels down? Looks like the skis were in the up position throughout the video, looks like it made the taxiing and takeoff draggier than needed to be

Maybe a hydraulic malfunction, I didn't notice that. Time to
enhance.

Those skis were not designed for 8.50 x 6 tires. THe added diameter of the tires prevent the skis from completely extending. These may have had the rigger arms lengthened a bit to accomodate the bigger tires, but.....

Right? I can't get a GoPro mounted outside on the strut to last more than 15' in the real cold before the battery dies. Really limits the movie-making potential.

December 6, 2025:
Lake’s been frozen for almost 2 weeks and we’re at 4” thick already. Saw some ice fisherpeople out there the last 2 days. I drilled the ice with my 2” auger to measure and got a wicked pressure crack release that about made me ruin my shorts. I know 4” is safe to walk but it still creeps me out.

I’ve gone through the ice a couple times. Once in 3rd grade walking home from school, crossed the ice between the tracks. Got out and ran the mile home without stopping. Never told anyone.
Another time I was hunting coyotes NE of Aspen on snow shoes, the old fashioned wood ones, 60” long. I was out across the river on a big drift that insulated the ice. Lucky for me the water was only about 2 feet deep. Climbing out of water and drifted snow with snowshoes on sucks. Spent most of the rest of the day drying and warming myself around a campfire. Hike back to the truck didnt cross questionable ice.
