Re: ICON A5

It's a gorgeous little airplane no doubt. That said, getting a hull type amphibian to behave well on the water is sometimes difficult. They've been working on this one for some time, so it appears at least that they're trying to do it right. Time will tell.

I'll bet, however, that the price goes UP instantly once they get it pushed out the door, since I suspect they've got it seriously underpriced. If they are actually to recoup their advertising and flight test costs, that is.

Re: ICON A5

I would love to have one, or even test fly one but I think as MTV says, it will be priced way out of my range.

Re: ICON A5

I wonder if they are still planning to have a power wing fold system, like the warbirds that you operate from INSIDE the cockpit?

Pretty hot flying for a product demo, a bit more aggressive then usual, as in the close wint tip clearance to the shoreline etc.

Nicely produced vid, there ya go Zane, get one!

Re: ICON A5

They had a silver one at the Tahoe Wooden Boat Show a couple years ago. They look better in person and the power wings are really cool. They were saying you could get the power folding wings or the retractable gear but not both. If you get the power wings you need to launch it like a boat. The wings fold on all of them for trailering and even the manual folding wings looked pretty easy to fold. They were taking deposits, $5,000 to get on the list but I think they guaranteed it for just over $100K back them. I would love to have one, even got me a poster.

Bill,

It's an SLSA. There is NO "airworthiness" by the FAA. Concensus standards....only.

Re: ICON A5

There has to be an airworthiness certificate, eh? Thought that was a requirement-- it's the A in ARROW.

Re: ICON A5

A damn sexy looking amphib. Wish it had a bit more useful load though. Two 170lb people and full fuel at 120lbs puts the plane over or damn near it's estimated useful load. Theres hardly anything reserve(if your lucky with 430-530lb estimated useful load) left over for your fishing/camping gear much less cold beer! :(

No airworthiness certificate. SLSA is NOT a certificated aircraft. They are produced to INDUSTRY concensus standards, NOT a Type Design, as a normal category aircraft would have.

Something goes wrong, don't blame the FAA, they didn't certificate it.....

Re: ICON A5

Did not know the Icon A5 is now spin resistant and the first LSA to meet the FAA standard. Stalled along side a C150.

Re: ICON A5

I saw the fuselage of an Icon A5 on the back of a flatbed tractor trailer heading north on the 405 through LA last week. It was wrapped in black plastic but there was no mistaking that it was an A5. Perhaps it was coming from Cirrus?

Re: ICON A5

Amazing piece of engineering. I've followed it for years since the thing has the influence of the motocross crowd. Troy Lee is on the board and brings a lot of heavy weights out to lust over it. I think Jeremy McGrath has flown it and might be an investor. They have a powerhouse board too, I suppose it's going to be the new must-have kinda like bush tires. Hopefully motorsports people can fly better than baseball players and movie stars or it'll get a stigma like Cirrus.

Re: ICON A5

Yes, but all the movie stars and motocross types in the world aren't going to do them any good if they don't get the thing on the market. Been a long time, which suggests to me that they are probably trying to do this thing right, but also I suspect they are having a hard time finding that good hull performance quality they need for such an airplane. Excellent water handling is going to be an absolute must for these airplanes, since they will doubtless be bought and flown by some really low time seaplane types, and there are lots of creative ways to get in trouble on the water, especially with a hull type.

I wish them luck, it looks like a gorgeous little airplane, and I hope they make it work. I'm betting they'll be pushing $200 K within six months of going into production.

Re: ICON A5

I think it started out at 100k 5 years ago. It's probably going to replace the Corvette as a midlife crisis mobile. It's roomy enough for a middle age guy with a beer belly, the remains of his ego, and Barbi. What more do you need?
