Re: Idaho streams

I hadn't been home for over two weeks now. But have heard reports from friends and nieghbors from their Facebook pages that some area's are good. I would think Johnson Creek is still flowing pretty good since that water is coming from the higher elevations. That's all I know. I'm sure you can find some good fishing some place, though.

my plan is to leave on the 29th as a travel day and get to JC sometime mid day weather permitting...It's an 8 hour for my old M4... first stop for fuel is Tonopah, then Battle Mountain and then into JC....I just need to get away and do some fly fishing... recharge the damn batteries so to speak...

Re: Idaho streams

Hey Butch, check gas prices. Don't know about Tonapatch, but Hawthorne was about $6.50 last week for 100LL. Yerington is $5.15, Silver Springs $5.00, Carson City $5.25.

Re: Idaho streams

Nerivno is the cheapest around I believe. $4.85g. Its not published anywhere but I get gas there almost every day. Land between the runways. Its part of our circuit and marked off. 500' of grass on one and 1000' of grass on the other.

GUMP, lets do some flying!

Re: Idaho streams

thanks...Tonopah is a 3 hour leg... Battle mt. is about 2 maybe a little less and into JC is 2 and a half to 3....then unload, start a fire, pitch the damn tent and a steak on the barbie with my baked potato and a sixpack of beer...heaven! =D> pretty soon flying will just be a thing of the past... 7,35 a gallon will be just another price on the way to 10 dollars a gallon... and our freedom will be gone...enjoy it while it lasts guys.... Re: Idaho streams

Yeah, the $7.35 is at KIC in Kotzebue for car gas. I hate to think what Crowley is charging now for avgas.

Re: Idaho streams

RE the Fishing prospects, I tried to fish Big Creek last week and it was still blown out. It is maybe a week or two out depending on the weather. I spoke to the outfitter at Dixietown and he said he cannot get into any of his lake spots due to snow. The week before I tried the East fork of Moose Creek and it too was still high. We had heavy rain last night so that will not help things. I am not a guide but in my opinion the good news of the story is that the fish have not been pressured the bad news is you are going to have to put lots of weight on to get to the bottom.

RE fuel, if you are in the area Orofino is still $5/gallon.

Re: Idaho streams

If you're fly fishing, even though the water might still look blown out, certain streams are starting to become fishable, find the slower water and fish the banks or shallower water riffles, larger dry flies such as parachute adams and stimulators in size 12 to 16 might work well, green drake hatches might come off at some point during the day like early afternoon, watch for those, caddis could start coming off early evening to dark along with PMD's. Maybe try a beadhead nymph dropper rig behind the dry fly on an 18 inch 3X leader tied off to the bend of the dry fly hook. Finding and fishing some slower water is key in these conditions.

Hope that might help

Re: Idaho streams

If you go to Cabin bring Mosq repellent by the gallon. Due to the wet year the marshes along Big Creek and very wet and producing a bumper crop of bugs. If you find something that works on the gnats at North Moose Creek let me know. I just started to take it for granted that my morning coffee would have about 50 bugs floating in it---and extra shot of protein.

Re: Idaho streams

Not sure why I didn't think about this. But, how about jumping down to Landmark? I have no idea how the fishing will be down there, but you can park the plane and walk down to the Johnson Creek.

Re: Idaho streams

I've fished Landmark before one summer... stream was very low and only caught juvenile salmon ... you know those 3 and 4 foot salmon that pass by JC campground on their way upstream finally wind up around Landmark where they spawn..the ones I caught were about 12 inches or so... and I hesitate to fish where so many of them are... I do my best to release anything I catch unharmed but I'd rather not even catch juvies if I can help it... I'm sure there are cut throats there too as I've caught cuts below the bridge at JC in the slower deeper water there... anyhoo. I'm not too concerned I'll find fishing somewhere... I'll try Wilson Bar, even though it's big water, Lower and Upper Loon and Cabin . I'm only going for 8 days at JC with a day of travel at each end of the 8, so if no fish then I'll just veg and mingle with whoevers there...I'll visit with my old buddy Dave Immel in Yellow Pine and maybe have another elk burger Dinner if he invites me... and of course I'll make it up to Elk CIty to visit Curtis for a day... :D
