If Idaho Was Flat?

Hello Backcountry Pilots,

I won a $$$ bet on the following information. Everytime I fly in any direction from my Clear Creek place I'm reminded of Idaho's topography, and lack of emergency landing areas in a piston powered, single engine airplanes. However, somethings in life are worth the risk.

James

If all the lower 48 states were ironed out flat, Idaho would be the largest; its rugged terrain with towering cliff sides, pine-forested peaks and deep canyons make Idaho's natural scenery one of the wildest and striking in the U.S. The southern half of the state is much lower in elevation compared to the north. The Snake River forms the western border with part of Washington and Oregon before turning into the state and bisecting the southern half, meandering through the fertile Snake River Plain in the eastern part of the state. The Bitterroot Range serves as a natural border with Montana, and further east, the Clearwater and Salmon River mountains extend for miles into the some of the most isolated regions in America. Native Americans had long settled in the region of Idaho, the most dominant groups being the Nez Perce in the north and Shoshone in the south. The Lewis and Clark Expedition traversed the northern terrain of Idaho, becoming the first Europeans to explore the area. Missionaries and fur traders began to settle the area in the early 1800's, but it was not until 1846 that the U.S. established a permanent foothold in the region. Some 14 years later the first organized town, Franklin, was set up by Mormon pioneers (who thought they were in Utah). In 1863, the Territory of Idaho was at last established, though the borders remained in dispute until 1868. On July 3rd, 1890, President Benjamin Harrison signed in Idaho as the 43rd state to enter the Union.[/i]

Re: If Idaho Was Flat?

Didn't know that particular fact, it will be filed away for future reference, right along with Idaho have the most wilderness in the lower 48. It also explains why I have not gotten bored yet. =D>

Here's another interesting tidbit, a ranking of the 50 states by average elevation above sea level.http://www.netstate.com/states/tables/s ... n_mean.htm It has some surprises, like Kansas beating out Alaska in having a higher AVERAGE altitude, good for winning a bar bet maybe.

Hello Courierguy,

I guess we both learned something new today.

Thanks,

James

If Idaho was flat, like Kansas, instead of having 100 foot tall radio towers on top of a mountain where you expect to see them it would have 1,000 foot tall towers spread around at random where you don't expect to see them, like Kansas and a few other places have. Also I prefer to climb 100 foot towers instead of 1,000 foot towers to work.

Interesting that Nevada has a higher high point and a lower low point. Also a higher mean elevation. Nevada also has the most individual mountain ranges in the US.

But it is desolate and God forsaken and there are a bunch of A-holes that fly there.

Interesting. I have often heard that Nevada is the most "mountainous" state but I guess Idaho wins on the ironing board.

I'm officially a resident of Fish Haven, Idaho now so I have something to brag about….

Fish Haven is a pretty cool place. I spent some time down there this summer and the locals were really great. Not many places you can drive around in a vehicle with gov plates and people still wave at you with more than one finger.

Re: If Idaho Was Flat?

Idaho projects a surface area of roughly 84,000 square miles, and Texas (the largest by projected area) pencils out to roughly 269,000 square miles.

If Texas was completely flat, then Idaho's terrain would have to stretch out to about 3.2 times its projected size when ironed out.

This means the average 'slope' at any point in the entire state would have to be arccos(84/269), or about 72 degrees to make the 'stretched out' area of Idaho the same as the flat area of Texas. That means that, on average, roughly half the state would have to be steeper than that, and half would be less than that.

Idaho is mountainous and fascinating, but I'm not so sure it flattens out to the biggest state in the lower 48 except on the list of cool places to fly to and fish.

This sounds correct.

You might be thinking that Nevada has the "Most Mountain Ranges"?? Over 150 mountain ranges. 30 peaks over 10,000ft.

Or I might be thinking "which is the most mountainous state?" Nevada. Over 150 named mountain ranges
