iFly GPS

Hey guys:

Anybody have one of these? If so, please submit a pirep on it.

It sounds really neat, and what a savings vs my Garmin.

Thanks,

Rich

You're never too old to learn something stupid.

Re: iFly GPS

i do not have one myself but flew with my friends' ifly700 and two things bothered me about it. one was the suction cup did not stay fixed to the windscreen, it kept falling off no matter how hard i tried to make it stick. the second thing is there is no on-off switch to the device, you plug it into the cigarette lighter and it goes on and to turn it off you unplug it. you can of course install a switch in-line so you could leave it connected and i would think the manufacture would have at least given that a thought. i did not like plugging it in and then having to unplug it to turn it off. on the upside, it workled beautifully, easy to learn and simple to look at. i think it is a very nice unit and thinking of buying one myself. john

Re: iFly GPS

I am thinking of geting one. My lighter turns off when the master switch is turned off. Problem solved.

What's wrong with your 396? Don't go spending money on stuff you don't need. Siskiyou County welfare people are counting on you.

Re: iFly GPS

Skypony (John) has been using one for several months now. I will let him know you want some info. His seems to be easy to use but it needs a sunscreen in bright daylight. Nice looking unit and excellent graphics.

Consider an Anywhere Map Quadra, or their new 7-inch screen model the Septa, as an alternative (http://www.anywheremap.com) Neither of the issues noted by Yellowbird on the IFLy exist with the Anywhere Map GPS units. They come with yolk mount and cig lighter power adapter, and have on-off switches as well as internal batteries. The screen resolution is much better than the Garmin hand-helds, and they come with a lot more features and capability built in that you don't have to pay extra for like on the Garmin (if available at all), and the subscriptions are dirt cheap compared to Garmin/Jeppesen.

They're selling the 4.3-in QuadraMax (with FAA Sectional Map screen presentation included in the $115 annual data subscription - free the first year) for around $600 now, and the new 7-in Septa model (also yolk mount) with high res terrain mapping is $1,100. The units come with taxi maps built in, along with a cheap gas finder, it's all touch screen, and you can update the unit using a wi-fi connection to the internet, without having to connect to a PC.

If you fly IFR, Anywhere Map also has available hi res approach plates that work with any of their GPS units.

If you want to add XM Wx, add a Weather-Worx blue-tooth receiver for $700, plus your XM Wx subscription. So a Septa with XM Wx is $1,800 - half the price of the G696, with an annual data subscription that runs less than 20% of the Garmin sub.

I've had the AnywhereMap ATC for a couple years now, with XM Wx. It's reliable and easy to use, with some nice features like "rubber band flight plans" when you have to navigate around a T-storm in your path, and overall it's just a terrific nav tool at a modest price.

Yep your on target. Paper charts and a 396 are darn good. Rob Burson has so much tech in his plane he has no room for important stuff like twinkies. I should mabe take that back, I have seen him with a generator tanning lights.

Re: iFly GPS

I have one and like it. My only complaint right now is no WAC charts so if you go to Mexico or Canada you need something else.
The power issue is no big deal as Tim says, the lighter is switched by avionics master switch so it comes on with everything else when I flip the switch. It has approach plates and High and Low IFR charts with the subscription for 69 a year you can keep it all current. The default is VFR charts and its easy to set up and fly with. The new v5.08 software added some cool stuff.

I'll have to let you check it out next time I fly up to drink your soda and watch you work on your Highlander :D

Re: iFly GPS

Why not get an iPad it'll do all that and more. You can use it outside your plane.

Consider this another vote for a Garmin 396 and paper charts. That's my setup as well.

Re: iFly GPS

Geezz,

What a bunch of wimps. I flew my S1-C Pitts, for 12 years, all over the nation with out an electrical system or radio...using sectional charts and a mag. compass. Only got lost once in a while. Finally graduated to a Skybolt with a com. radio, VOR and sectional charts for 6 years.

O.K. O.K. For the last nine years I've traveled around in the Maule with a Garmin 196 and sectional charts. Yeah. The airplane is IFR certified. But when I do seldom go that way...it is Victor airways and the ILS. Takes me anywhere that I want to go...down the 200 ft. and 1/2 mile. Ain't spent a dime on avionics in 10 years and don't intend to.

No use in makin that $100.00 hamburger into a $1,000.00 hamburger. Only geeks are impressed. The ladies are looking for something else.
