IFR Ticket

Yes, I'm going to toot my horn a bit. Why? Because I worked my butt off the last 10 months and just passed my IFR check ride with a grizzled old ex fighter pilot veteran as the DE. Talk about sweating it out! Glad its behind me, and now I get to learn more without that check ride looming in front of me! Yahooo...

Congrats, and smart move. Not having an IFR ticket, especially living near the coast, is like having a car and not being able to drive on the freeway.

I will also give you a "well done". Getting your IFR ticket is something to be very proud of. The commitment and work required was one of the tougher things I have done. I wish I had been as motivated in other areas as I was in getting the rateing.
You will be a much better pilot for your efforts.
Next on the list, Rob are you listening?

Way to go. After the examinar signed me off he advised that my first hard IFR should be going down the Sacramento valley. When there was 2000 ft pluss ceiling he said to file then ask for an elevation that would get you in it.
Did that and was comfortable knowing that all I had to do is let down then I would be out. From there I worked into more dificult senarios.

I also got some good training in the San Joaquin Valley. Was flying my 206 back to Mammoth from Oakland when it was raining very hard. Filed for 11,000 and was solid and then started picking up ice. I watched it growing and me slowing until I had had enough. Ceilings were about 7,000 and so was the freezing level. Asked for lower and got rid of the ice. Spent the night in Fresno and about 3/8" was max for the normally aspirated 206 and my shorts.

Congrats!!
For those of us who have it we can appreciate the work you've done. Go slow and learn the benefits the IFR certificate will provide you.

Congratulations on your new ticket!! I passed mine also last September and know how good it feels to get it done, but I also enjoyed getting it too, it was challenging but fun, anyway, congrats.

Speaking of that...are you going to need a safety pilot again soon? This week is looking pretty bad for wx (for flying that is.)

M7 goes to the shop tomorrow morning for annual. Back at fire station Wednesday. Looks good for snow and the sledding trip next weekend.
Cheers...Rob

Thank you all for the congrats, and can tell that you IFR guys appreciate how hard I worked to pass that check ride.
The DE I had used to fly F100's and F105's in Vietnam and told me that he would rather fly combat missions than go for a check ride. Now, I can relate.
Not trying to scare any of you that are working on it, but I will never forget that day. Go for it. Fly a lot in the weeks leading up to it, and think of the stress involved as part of the training, for when you might need to perform under similar stress in the real IFR world.

Yep, let me add my congratulations. The instrument/airplane is a difficult and yet rewarding rating. It will make you much more familiar with the "system", but at the same time, it will make your basic aviating skills that much better as well.
One of the most wonderful things I recall about flying was the day I passed my instrument practical, and flew back to the home base VISUAL!! Whoo--Hooo. I'd not realize how much I'd come to hate that hood.
Take care, and fly safe.

Here I am with 9000 hours in lots of different situations, and I do not have mine, yet. I almost did get an IFR years ago, but sold the plane that had all the gizmos and never finished.
You guys are getting me juiced up. What is a good IFR PC training simulator now days? Don't they have them that "talk" to you, etc?
congrats,
John

Way to go whynotfly!!! I was lucky enough to get mine done over nine years ago. I can honestly say it was worth every bead of sweat! Defineately helps make you a better pilot, and the insurance industry recognizes that immediately. Let your carrier know, you should see an instant gratification.
