Steve has been my co-pilot on multiple trips. Steve is one fine individual, pilot and co worker. Steve is the kind of guy you would be proud to be associated with. I hold him in very high regard. He is the real deal. Very good man.

Re: In my Seat 9-11-2001

Powerful,

My career for 35+ years, my fellow airmen. You know how folks like to denegrate airline crewmembers....right? But did you hear the composure in the voice of that flight attendant as her fellow crewmembers died and she was about to die? Not some ditzy, airhead, space cadet. Rather she was typical of her fellow flight attendants....when adversity stikes.

And what about Steve and the copilot who bumped him off of the open flight? Average Joes? No damned way!!

The major airline industry has traditionally hired exceptional people. They quietly go about their duties while often enduring abuse and disrespect from those who couldn't begin to manage such achievment. Steve's story and the crews aboard the American and United flights that day were/are living examples of why, despite the public abuse, the major airline industy is like no other business and the potential circumstances in which it's crewmembers may find themselves are like no other profession.

Steve's testimony was very, very moving. I admire him for his faith and conviction. On the other hand, although I consider myself a Christian... I prefer to believe that life's events are random...... a matter of chaos and fate rather than God's grand plan.

On July 17, 1996 I was booked to fly on TWA flt. #800 from New York to Paris, France. I was to meet my 14 year old daughter in Paris and fly back to St. Louis with her the next day. Kate had been staying with friends in Switzerland for a couple of weeks. I didn't want her to travel alone and so our friends planned on bringing her to Paris by train to meet me so that we could fly home together.

Kate called a couple of days before our planned flights and asked if she could stay in Switzerland an extra week. Of course I granted her wish and cancelled my plans to fly on TWA 800.

The rest is history. TWA 800...a B-747.... exploded off of Long Island enroute Paris. All aboard died. I was scheduled to die among them!

Life is like that. Maybe Steve is right. Who knows?

Never forget September 11, 2001 and those who died.
