I probably will have a little error in this message, but: Today I got a call from my mechanic, telling me that Cessna was offering to install, FREE(maybe this is an April fools thing, but I don't think so), some sort of inertia seat restraint. If it becomes an AD, they will charge $1800.00. I think the offer is only supposed to be good for a couple weeks. Apparently something attaches to the seat to keep it from sliding back accidently.

Anyone hear anything aout this? And if so, what are your thoughts?

Saw one on a 182, Bolts to the floor then wraps around the seat frame and has a circular assembly the belt feeds/restrains through. I have the aerostops, they work well but you have to remember to release the lock after take off so you could get the seat back to get out in a hurry.

This really isn't something that I want. But, talking with my dad today, he feels that there might be a pretty good chance that this could become an AD. At which point you would have to spend the $18OO, or more to comply.

I thought that I might go ahead and have it installed for free, but then take it out, until the day that it became mandatory, then just put it backin.

Sounds a bit rummy to me...Cessna is going to install $1800 parts on every plane they've built in the last sixty-odd years for free, but only if you act now?

Well, it sounded kind of odd to me also, that is why I brought it up here. Lot of people here know a lot more about this stuff than me.
Today was the first day that I had heard anything at all about this.

Have it put in. The reason that Cessna is offering to do it for free is because they've been sued due to seats not being properly locked on takeoff.

The catch is the pilot's seat is free. The right front seat (copilot seat) will cost you.

As soon as the weather improves, I'm flying to my local Cessna dealer and having a set installed.

You can order the parts from Cessna for free, and have them installed by a local mechanic. If you have an approved Cessna maintenance facility do the job, it's free. Labor and parts. For the pilot's seat.

These things work a lot better than the safety stops, and require no action by the pilot.

I think they are a great idea and long overdue.

I picked up six of them today. have to be installed by May 1 09 I believe. You then provide a copy of the log book entry and a letter Cessna gave you and you get 400.00 I think they said for labor.

I'm still not sure this isn't a joke, but does anyone have contact info? I found nothing on Cessna's web site except a lot of pressure to buy a citation.

Just what Hafast said, it's the real deal. I just had an annual done on my 182 and my mechanic told me the same thing. I didn't know I had to pay for the pass. side, though . I'm going to try to get mine done this year.

We got a price estimate today. I think the parts were around $400./side, and the labor $180/side. Pilot side free. 2 week back order on parts.

Not "inertia": the reel locks unless you lift the handle.
Works well, would have been better if they attached it to the front of the seat, ala the MPA, rather than the back. (seat could still tip over if pops off track).

This is a "SB" not an AD yet. (There is an AD on some of the "SB" reels used in the first batch: Cessna will replace the bad reel.) SB is on line, sketches show various installations.

Were hard to get: they only let me do the pilot, would not sell the other side on until they "catch up".

Bottom line:
it is automatic,works well, easier to release than ANY other type, especially in an emergency (when the case of beer/oil/survival/camping gear is on the aerostop)

Should not relieve the practice of checking seat, just another backup.

I knew it was 400.00 for something.

I had it done on my 182 a couple of weeks ago. Right now it is a service bulletin, and yes it is free on the left seat. They gave me a quote for the right seat of about $450.00 for labor and material. The inertia reel has a cable connected to the seat acuater that allows you to move the seat back and forth. Seems to work ok.

We're doing the annual on 04D today and will finish up tomorrow when we'll be installing them. Our AI speaks highly of them and said just as some of you have said, we can recoup the cost of the parts & labor via Cessna after the installation is complete and signed off.
