Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

IO-520 on Cessna 182

I'm modifying a P model cessna 182. We are hoping to do a IO-520 engine I have a mechanic that can do the install. Does anyone have any suggestions for the stc? I know airplains has one, but its very expensive. Anyone else have any other experience with this conversion that they can share?

Expensive????? An aircraft STC which permits the installation of a different engine????? I'm shocked.... :D

Sorry, couldn't resist. With the requirement for fuel return lines, it is GOING to be a big deal, not just a bolt on, I'm betting.

Re: IO-520 on Cessna 182

look seriously at the PPONK O-470-50 conversion. I did this conversion on my 182 this year, had Steve at PPONK build it, essentially it is your O-470 case, machined out to accept ECI 520 cylinders with the venturi valves on it they claim 275hp, conservatively. Personal conversations with Steve up at PPONK he claims most make 280-285hp on the dyno. This is a carbed engine, so there are no modifications what so ever to the airframe, i was looking at putting IO520 IO550 in my rig, the cost of these conversions are like 80 grand when the chips all fall!! The pponk with a new scimitar 82" 3 blade hartzell was about half that.

Mine isnt just an off the shelf PPONK, the cylinders were ported and polished, the rotating assemblies were blued and balanced...all in all it is just a sweet running beautiful thing! I can outrun a 1975 C182P with the IO470F from peterson, with the speed mods, flap gaps, speed pants all that crap, when i picked the plane up in Washington, i reset my GNS530 and with 37hr on it now, my average speed is 147kts, my top speed is 181kts coming into truckee! 25 squared the plane will do 148-155kts at any altitude up to about 5000' in good air, but it takes some gas to do that...it is still a 182!. The plane gets with the program! I had Graham up at NW air repair do the install he did a fantastic job really and did it quite reasonably as well!

There are many of us on this forum with the pponk, all of us have one thing in common...the PPONK GRIN!! im sure more of them will chime in on this topic, and as far as i can tell we are all very happy with the conversion.

If you search the forum for PPONK there are many threads about them, i also have a thread with some photos you might be interested in checking out!

No matter what you do...remember it is a 182 it will climb like a rocket, and get up into the low 150's for speed, but it aint gonna be a bonanza! At first i had expectations of 160KT cruise....umm yeah right buddy its a draggy gear down chevy caprice with wings!!
