IO 550 overhaul

Getting close to overhauling my io-550-f that is in my 206 . Anyone have some engine shop recommendations ? Good or bad experiences with certain shops ? Don't really want to throw any particular shop under the bus so if you have some super negative stuff to say I would love to hear it but maybe a PM would be best for that. Although if they were soooo bad that you think the world should know then let it rip . .... Will most likely be just crating it up and sending it off so as far as install and all that goes I'm all set , . Just trying to avoid a really expensive pain in my ass so just trying to gather as much info as I can . Thanks people !

Re: IO 550 overhaul

I've had a great experience with both LyCon in Visalia, CA, and Custom Airmotive in Tulsa, OK. Did a lot of research after having a couple bad experiences with other builders.

Custom Airmotive is the gold standard among all the IA/A&P's I trust. Some of these mechanics have been installing their engines for over forty years. LyCon has a stellar reputation as well, and the customer service I experienced was excellent.

Lawson Aviation did an excellent job on the O-470 that is in my 180.

I couldn't be more pleased with the engine and service.

Re: IO 550 overhaul

Nice quick replies guys thanks ! . Being real close to Lycon I have investigated them recently . . All I have heard about the product they put out has been positive. The timely execution of that product has come in to question. Willing to wait for a good product just not wanting to wait all summer . This plane needs to earn it's keep . Talked to Steve Knopp about building one for me but the motivation didn't seem to be there . Heard rumors of him hanging it up . Was really hoping to have him do it as I had a 520 he did that ran great and have never heard any complaints about his rebuilds . Keep it coming . I appreciate all the info .

Re: IO 550 overhaul

Not on an extra tight schedule and factory reman is very pricey . Did one on my old 207 and paid dearly . That thing ran and ran, then I sold it and it's still running 10 years later .!!!! I feel like I can get the same results for a lot less $$ At least I hope I can . I do need to work this plane in order to pay for it but this is going to be the long term family truckster . Just got a cargo pod installed last summer . Dialing in the seating arrangements now and have dealt with a number of airframe things that needed attention . This thing is going to be in the family for awhile . Almost a relief that the old engine took a shit on me so I can do this . I've always hated flying around on the unknown shit I inherited with this engine .

Re: IO 550 overhaul

Take it to lycon talk to Lorne and tell him to do all the tricks to it!
I had a pretty low opinion of the 550 until I flew their version, on the second one now and it's a stud just like the first.

Re: IO 550 overhaul

Steve Knopp--- Yes, Yes-great choice. Did my 550 in my wagon. Super turbine smooooooooth and balenced. Steve has two guys that he's personally trained that work for him in his shop and Steve does all the Q/ C and final inspections. Pro Aero also is top notch. Just kinda spendy in the past, but with the better exchange rate it might be decent deal. One of my freinds swears by them and won't take his engines anywhere else.
