Ipad kneeboard?

Has anyone been using a kneeboard for their Ipad that they really like? Any issues with having it on your knee in a reasonably tight environment like a Cub cockpit?

Ipad kneeboard?

I use the kneeboard cradle from RAM. I like it a lot. Very securely fastened to my knee and very comfortable, and it is adjustable so you can have it centered over your thigh or offset to one side or the other which would be good for aircraft with a center stick or in my case a pilot with long legs and a yoke that is in my lap. The iPad pops out of the cradle at a touch to hold which I appreciate, I like taking it off my knee to bring it up into my field of vision for certain things. Easy to pop back in again by feel without having to look down. Same quality as all of RAM products - good.

Don't make one for the mini. Yet.

MyGoFlight. Not cheap, but works great in plane and for general use.

MTV, I like the looks of that, but flying stick don't you find that having that extra piece/cover that flips over, gets in your way? Or, is there a way to tuck it under?

Re: Ipad kneeboard?

I fly with the myclip ipad strap in my J3 cub. It is very quick and easy to get the ipad in and out of and I find it's no problem in the cub, even with the stick. I can clip it in with the smart cover closed to save power then unclip 1 side flip it back and leave it open. I can write on it with the smart cover closed. I can also rotate it over so its straight up an down out of the way.

I also just unclip the ipad and stick the ipad in the seat pocket of the front seat to get it out of the way.

I'm thinking about a ram mount, but not sure where I'll put it and moving it around is not quite so easy. I'm going to keep flying this way for a while and see how it goes. I've now got 18hrs in my cub, seems to be pretty good for me.

x2 but haven't flown it with a stick Pundy. You can remove the smart cover or let it drape next to your leg. BTW that cover isn't included in the basic package from MyGoFLight. They may offer it but it is really an Apple product. It's the cat's ass.

I use the otterbox http://www.sportys.com/PilotShop/product/16333

I love it. Its convenient in a tandem seat plane and I can slide it off to the side during take offs and landings.

Most of where I use the IPad is in a plane with a yoke, but I have played with it in a cub, and it works fine. You just have to let the cover drape down. The thing I really like about this one is it's also a really nice cover for general use as well. Does a good job protecting the device.

I bought the leather type, I have a friend with the metal box, and I'm not so wild about that one.

Re: Ipad kneeboard?

Do any of you know of any kneeboard options yet for the Ipad Mini? I just picked one up and started playing with it. Looks like it would work great in my 7GCBC on a kneeboard.

Re: Ipad kneeboard?

BTW, a cool trick if you use a touch screen and also wear gloves. You normally have to get some silver thread, screw some gizmo or buy touch enabled gloves. Well most of the touch enabled gloved do not protect you, in fact will cripple you, in a fire. So if you get some silver based thermopaste (the stuff you put on CPU's in computers, commonly known as "birdshit") and rub it in the tips of the gloves, they will work. They will look a bit dirty, but most gloves used with a plane look like crap very quickly.

Re: Ipad kneeboard?

I use my iPad 3 in my Maule MX-7-180 and in the C-185 that I fly for work. Can't say that I've found the ideal solution yet, but I've tried several kneeboards without much success. You need to angle the forward edge of the iPad up to cut out glare and make it more readable, but that makes it get in the way of the yoke in my Maule - not so much in the C-185. RAM suction cup mount on the copilot side windshield with the RAM spring clip iPad mount works the best for me. If you have polarized sunglasses, you'll have to turn the iPad to landscape orientation or you won't be able to see the screen due to opposite polarization in the screen. Mounting the iPad higher with a clearer view through the windshield has the added benefit of better GPS signal and cell phone signal in a metal skin airplane.

I'm not really big on most of these whizbang electronic gizmos, but a guy I know was showing his new ipad (?) sectional/GPS app's off to me yesterday & it looked like a pretty slick arrangement. He does IFR & had all his approach plates in the thing too.

If you do IFR, you'll save $$ and hassle over paper and updates.

Re: Ipad kneeboard?

My company no longer carries paper of any sort in the cockpit. All iPad. Jepp FD for IFR approach plates and charts, all ops manuals, flight manuals, etc.

For a kneeboard I've used just a simple metal approach plate holder, sawed the top (where the clip was) and bottom so it was about 5" tall, velcro on it and velcro on the back of the iPad. iPad is a little big, especially for those of us working a stick. I'm trying an iPad Mini this month so will see how that works out. Usually I just stick the iPhone to the dash and it does triple duty for nav, wx update, cel-com, and tunes to the Bose X20.

Used the RAM "glareshield lip" mount on the right side of the 7GCBC. Clamped it to the tubing that runs across the lower lip of the instrument panel. Tried the short arm double ball and it was surprisingly solid, but you could still swing it away easily if needed for those narrow strips. Fly it in EFIS view, whoo-hoo!

I use a Sport Kneeboard from MyGoFlight. I'm still running an iPad 1 with ForeFlight and it is working well.

Re: Ipad kneeboard?

I use just a standard leather iPad cover with a flap that flips over the screen. When I'm not using it (ForeFlight) I set it on one end in between the side panel and the rudder cable in the cub. Usually on the right side simply because I am right handed. When I want to check the chart or something I just grab it, flip the cover around to the back and set it on my lap. Its always stowed for takeoff and landing but other than that it goes back and forth as needed.

Re: Ipad kneeboard?

I know it was thread creep.... but I liked dogpilot's tip on gloves. I fly with nomex, and the ipad.
Have a drawer full of the thermal compound for CPU heat sinks... just never would have thought of rubbing it on the gloves. But I find my dexterity is degraded with that shit all over my palms... What was he thinking?
By the way... for all those iphone/ipad users... checkout ZephyrCharts. Super cheap sectional charts and moving airplane symbol. Nothing fancy... but a double tap and the flight heads to that airport.
Now, I gotta go wipe off all that extra birdshit.

Flying is dangerous. If you think otherwise, you are new at this sport. Mind the gravity not the gap.
