Is this real or is it RC?

Wait a second for this to load: Hard to tell if the aircraft are real or not, but I think they might be radio control from the engine noise and the lack of reaction on the part of the bystanders.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

The following are pictures of what happened to my twin brother this past Memorial Day wk. end. He was fiddling with his RC plane (with a 16" prop  ) and it took off straight for him. He jumped out of the way and threw his left arm up...the prop sliced through his arm to the bone. It happened at an ulatralight field, and no one was around. :( So he wrapped up his arm in his t-shirt and was fortunate enough to find someone who called an ambulance for him. He is expected to regain at least 90% of the use of his arm (there are 32 staples in his arm). Thank goodness he is okay!! I hate to think of how it could have been much worse! He is a Major in the Marine Corps (stationed at San Antonio right now), and if he had lost the use of that arm, he would have most likely gotten a medical discharge.

My husband (cubdude) has a lot of RC planes, also. Sorry for the graphic pictures, but this accident just serves as a reminder that even RC props are dangerous. My brother is embarrassed, but it could happen to anyone.

I fly a fair amount of RC too...those props are like knives. Sharp, plastic knives. I'm sure there are a whole bunch more injury stories like this out there. I'm not sure I could take the photos... [puke]

Ouch!

I apologize that those 2 pictures are on the menu page in the "recent image upload" section for all to see.

We should have had a caption contest.

I used to have a big box handy for all the pieces

I used to bring the original box to the flying field to bring the plane home when I was done flying. It took a lot longer to get it out of the box than back in. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, balsa to balsa.......

Cubchick,

Tell your bro to get well quick. Photos are pretty....well just say we feel his pain.

I remember years ago when someone was killed during an RC helicopter meet. Rotor parted and cut through someones neck.

Brings to mind another accident that happened when a family was going on a weekend fun flight. The dad loaded everyone on board while the Cessna was still in the hangar and decided to start up and taxi out instead of pulling it out. To shorten the story the prop wash started closing the pilot side hangar door, the daughter got out to hold it open and ran straight into the prop cutting her in half. Tragic.

Think twice and sometimes three times. Safety Safety Safety

Fly It Like You Mean It!

For you R/C guys...I believe he was running an APC 16X4W composite on a Saito 1.80 which has about 3hp. The plane was an ultra-stick 120.
