ISO Anchorage CFI/Flight School

The title sums it up-- after putting it off for FAR too long, I'm looking to jump into my flight training. I'm working through the King ground school series and will be completing medical in the next week or two. Work keeps me on the road most of the time, but I expect to have a good 1-2 month period at the end of January where I'll be back home in Anchorage. I'd like to be able to push through and fly as frequently as possible during this period-- I'll have a very flexible schedule, and would like to get in the air as often as WX and the CFI's availability allows!

That being said, I'm looking for some recommendations on CFIs or flight schools in the area. My end goal involves a lot of tailwheel, float, and ski flying, and ideally I'd complete tailwheel training sooner rather than later, if that makes a difference. Any recommendations would be highly appreciated!

Welcome. Because of the law of primacy, tailwheel first is a lot easier on tailwheel airplanes. At least tailwheel training is easier/quicker if you have little or no nose wheel time. Dynamic proactive rudder movement makes it as fast as riding a bike. If you have unicycle time, it is a nada.

Tangogawd on this site is up there somewhere around Anchorage. I did maneuvering flight and crop duster training with him and he picked it up very well.

I received my PPL in Anchorage through Land and Sea Aviation at Merrill Field. I would recommend them, they have CFIs available pretty much from 8 AM - 10 PM, 7 days a week. They have 172s to train in and also a Citabria if you’re looking to do the tailwheel training. Larry was my CFI, very knowledgeable and easygoing guy. However, he only instructs on weekends and after 5 PM on weekdays, which happened to work perfectly with my work schedule. Cheers

Blue River Aviation - Jamie hasting not only has the expertise, but the enthusiasm. I’ve seen a lot of students start and get frustrated. The three most common roadblocks are students availability, instructor availability, and financial availability. I do not recommend starting until you have those covered.

Sounds like your time is limited. Take a ground school and get your written done. Then the next good chunk of time in town, get the flying done.

Jamie’s flight school has the instructor availability and airplanes. He also has a program that doesn’t drag things out; as long as you have the time and money.

Thanks for the responses.

Flylow, you're right that time is tight now - I'm following your advice in completing ground/written over the next month, and should have much more time available in a month when I hope to fly.
