ISO: IO470

I'm looking for an IO470. I would prefer a take-off runner but will give others some consideration.

Do tell ? Are you building something, or changing the Bearhawk ?

Re: ISO: IO470

I’ve learned that I’ve been too open and told to much in the past. I’m not going to do that anymore. But I appreciate the interest.

Short version: My engine suffered a failure. The parties involved are pointing the finger at each other which has left me holding the bag to an expensive repair. An IO470 may be a good alternative for a few reasons; more weight up front and better parts availability from aftermarket being the main ones.

Re: ISO: IO470

Oh Man, I'm sorry to hear that... both, the engine issues, and the people involved issues.
The IO470 might be just the ticket.
I look forward to following along. I've always appreciated the openness in your posts. You come across as real, and human, without the "been there, done that" attitude. Keep posting !

Re: ISO: IO470

Hope things work out for you. I follow the Beech Bonanza's pretty well and the guys on Beechtalk have IO-470's fairly often- removed for upgrades to 520 and 550's. Then they all harmonize about how the IO-470 is the best engine Continental ever built :D :D :D

You may check that out. Good luck..

Sorry to hear that, man. Best of luck in the search, I hope you get a great deal and get flying again soon!

Re: ISO: IO470

Thanks guys. It was a major bummer when we found the problem. So much for all the camping plans we had this summer.

Hopefully we’ll find a solution soon.

Note that the IO470 in Bonanzas had 8 to 1 pistons and developed 250 HP. The IO470 in 205's, early 185's and early 210's had 8.6 to 1 pistons and developed 260 HP. Advantage of the bonanze IO470 is that you can use Mogas in it

Not so fast smarty pants.. The N35 and P35 Bonanzas had the IO-470-N engine churning out 260hp. Also on the Beech site you will find the venerable IO-470-L (260hp) cores that served the Baron B55's for so many years (times two)...

You really should have known, Tim.

I am light on my beachraft knowledge. I do know sombody that was overhauling his cylinders in his O470 and accidently mistook 8 to 1 pistons for the 7 to 1 pistons he intended to put in. It took him a while to figure out why he had so much extra power

Ha! Sounds like a "mistake" worth making.....

Curious as to why (if starting from scratch) not find a IO520? Why not get more power?

Re: ISO: IO470

I hate engine issues especially when it involves multiple parties. Throw in experimental and it’s even easier to assign blame. Sorry man, hope you get made whole on the thing.

Re: ISO: IO470

I've got one off of a '64 185 out in Utah Wee. It's hasn't ran in years and I know very little about it's history, but it is complete and reportedly ran well when removed. Its headed in as a core for a 550 when I get to that point of my project. I wouldn't consider it a takeoff runner, but it's here just taking up space and I'd probably sell it at a core price if you get to the point that you want to clean one up.

When selecting an engine several years ago I asked a local 135 operator for advise. At the time I was leaning towards a 520 or a 360. He asked a bunch of questions then suggested I go with a 470. While more power is always welcome it’s not something I’ll looking for. I figure if I re-engine the plane I’ll listen to the guys with decades of experience.

Thanks. At this point I just want the plane fixed and I’ll chalk it up to a lesson learned.

Thanks Hendo. I appreciate the offer. I had a miss understanding of the core value of these engines which is why I thought I could find a runner at a justifiable price point. Now that I’m straightened out there I’ll have to reevaluate what I’m going to do.
