Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum so please excuse me if this is already posted somewhere...

I'm a flat lander (Florida) who recently bought a J-3 (100hp) in Coeur D Alene ID. I'm leaving her out there for a year or so and have gone out once to fly her a month ago. I plan on going back out 3 or 4 times between now and late summer; hoping to see as much of ID backcountry as I can.

Realizing a 100 hp J-3 is not exactly a supercub, I have little monntain experience, and no Idaho experience, I'm looking a private "instructor" in Idaho (Macall? maybe)...

Any input would be appreciated.

Also... what strips would you recommend knowing the J-3's limitations?

I have no conventional gear experience but if I were in your shoes I would find an instructor that did not weigh too much (if she had nice legs that would also be ok). I think that Moose Creek should be very doable and that is pretty close to your local.

You might try Amy Hoover, a former owner of a mountain flying school in McCall, she lives in eastern Washington now. She has a web page, just google her or www.canyonflying.com

Mike Kincaid 208 661-1588 has a 100hp J3 that he uses for float training out of Coeur d' Alene. He was an alaska state trooper / pilot prior to "retiring" to COE. Careful, he might convince you to put the thing on floats.

Bring it down here to our place in Nevada.

Gump, Jmtgt, Super Dave, and myself will shake it out for you and let you know what the limitations are.

Then you can come out, fly around and learn what your limitations are.

I am quite sure if Gump is done being under exit 48 he could show you a plenty.

100 hp J-3 should go about anywhere. We have lots of sunshine and plenty of density altitude for you to practice in.

We could even keep it in heated hanger if we had to.

The 100horse cub should have no problem here in Idaho. Try Rich Bush in McCall. (208)634-3248. He is a great instructor and is quite familiar with cubs and the Idaho backcountry.
