Joining the Skywagon group...

Well, after selling and delivering the Citabria, the itch for flying has been bitterly agressive. I know I know, its only been 2 weeks, but man not having a plane around to fly sucks! So this C-180 has been sitting around the area for the better part of 8-9 years, actually only been flown once in that time, and has been catching my eye a fair bit. Finally got to hagglung with the owner on price. He actually called me and offered to sell it to me 2 years ago for a price that I thought was outrageous. Well, fast forward a couple years, and we came to terms on almost half what he was originally asking. Can't wait to take it around the circuit a few times! I'll have to wait a bit more as I'm waiting for my buddy to come home and check me out in it.
Heres some specs.
1962 C-180E.
6367.5 hrs TT
Apprx 1200 SMOH
0 SPOH, 3 blade 84" hartznell just came back from getting O/Hed.
1760lbs on wheels (on the scales)
LR tanks
Horton STOL
Comes with hydraulic wheel skis.
Fresh annual

Its been parked at my AMEs place for a while and hes been taking care of it and knows the plane well. Its not the shiniest, but hoping a good waxing will change that. The interior and panel need work, but that will come with time. For now I'll probably just put in shoulder harnesses and do something about the little tires and keep the rest of the $s for gas to burn around and get comfortable in it! Woohoo! Did I say I was excited?

Re: Joining the Skywagon group...

OMG! Whatever you do, DON'T change the shoulder harnesses! That's how it starts! Have you not seen bigrenna's build, or mine, or the others. Save yourself the thousands of dollars of therapy. Don't do it. If it has to be done, take the plane to someone in a different state, and then go on a vacation outside of the United States. Join a support group today! We didn't and look what happened to us. :D

Welcome to the world of the hot rod of bush planes. She already looks great.

Re: Joining the Skywagon group...

Thanks guys! Barnstormer, I live outside of the US so your advice doesn't do me much good! Haha! The only reason for changing the shoulder harnesses is because I would like 4 point. Safety issues. Trust me, I've been following all the build threads, but my wife and wallet won't let me get anything close to what you guys have done...

Good find. Didn't take long. Now you've got to change your signature. Looks like winter is about over in your parts. Can you get it into your strip yet?

Looks good David. You going BAS? Oh, and having the tail pull is nice...

Re: Joining the Skywagon group...

Karm, strip still has lots of snow on it, but road is good to land on.
Steve, I'm thinking BAS reel on the pilot side, non reel for passenger. Tail pulls would be nice, but it already has some smaller pull handles back there, so I'll try then first.

Re: Joining the Skywagon group...

I know it's extra coin, but having flown my friends 185 from the right seat with the non-reeling style (pain in the ass) I would spend the extra money and go reeling on both sides. It's much more comfortable.

Re: Joining the Skywagon group...

Huge congrats man! You will so love the airplane. The 180 is such a versatal airplane indeed. Phil's words couldn't be closer to the truth... It's a slippery slope, so guard that wallet (and enjoy the slide into poverty!) It sorta is worth it!

Re: Joining the Skywagon group...

Congrats! You will no doubt enjoy many hours flying it.

I also say to put both BAS harnesses up front, I know it's a few extra bucks, but it's money well spent. After that, just fix what needs fixin and put some hours on that workhorse. Then when the time and money comes, mod the heck out of it. ;)

Re: Joining the Skywagon group...

Welcome! Think you will be happy with it!

As others have said, they can be money pits, I just spent over 3 benjamins for a silly window latch replacement from Univair, since mine couldn't stand one more "field repair", and I am hanging on to my "dual tie wrap" brake line retainer instead of the spring clip because I think its ridiculous that a simple strap of spring steel should fetch in the ballpark of $200. All that said, it's an awesome airplane and I couldn't be happier that I bought it.

We will have to do that for sure. I know you were wondering which prop it had on it. Its not a schimitar, and it is the full 84" with rounded tips, not cut off. It is a limited one time approval. Very interested to see how it does.
Thanks to the rest of you guys for the kind words and words of caution. I still haven't picked the plane up as my AME was on holidays for a month. The xponder needs recertified, and the old ELT is going in the dump. Putting in a 406ELT, and since the plane needed a new battery, its getting a firewall mounted oddesey. Also picked up an Aera 796. Will yoke mount it for now, and if I can ever afford a panel upgrade I will mount it in the panel. Stoked to pick it up and start running gas through it!
