Jul 1 to 4, 2011 Starbuck, Minnesota Campout D32

Hope it is alright, I cross posted this from Maule.com Site

Hi All;

May be a little early on posting this event, but maybe some would like to put it on their summer calendars. July 1st to July 4th, But feel free to come earlier. I usually get there on Tuesday.

Sponsored by the Pope County Flyers in Starbuck, Minnesota.

During the weekend of July 4, Starbuck, Minnesota (D32) hosts a fly-in/campout in conjunction with the local Heritage Day celebration. They welcome all to fly in and camp under your wing at the beautiful 2500x200 foot airstrip. Airport facilities include a very modern AD building with restroom and shower facilities, kitchen and lounge facilities. Lake Minnewaska is located across the road from the airport with swimming and beach facilities. A restaurant is located on the water's edge with full meals and all beverages. Floatplanes are welcome adjacent to the beach area.

Village of Starbuck is about a 3/4 mile walk or bike ride north of the airport with restaurants and coffee shops and stores. Very scenic area on 7700 acre Lake Minnewaska. Located in west central Minnesota about 110 miles west/northwest of twin cities on the T-C sectional. D32

I have been attending this campout for more than 20 years and always have a very good time here. The local people are very friendly and aviation oriented. We have typically had 18 to 25 airplanes camping plus some local RV units. Pancake breakfast on Saturday usually serves more than 1200 breakfasts.

I will post more information as the time comes. PM me if you would like more info. Sure would like to see a flock of Maules and taildraggers there.

Did I mention floatplanes are welcome???

This looks like a great fly-in. I have flown over before. Pretty spot.

Re: Jul 1 to 4, 2011 Starbuck, Minnesota Campout D32

Gene,

Thanks for the invite. I am putting this on my calendar....subject unforesceen difficulties. I have an 1976 M-5-210-C and my buddy has a C-170. If I can talk him into it we would bring both airplanes. Our airplanes are based in Washington, Missouri at .....FYG.....35 miles SW of STL right along the Missouri River.

Not to seem ungrateful....but how are the mosquitoes around that time? I've had some awful experieces in the past. I do have a mosquito net that hangs from the wing and is about 4' by 8'. It is covered at the top and weighted with lead fishing sinkers so that it hangs tight to the ground. It works quite well as long as the wind isn't strong.

Thanks,

Bob

Bob; would sure enjoy meeting you and your buddy.

We can probably camp close to 50 airplanes with relative ease. Starbuck is a beautiful setting and lots of very nice folks.

As for the mosquitoes, yes they can get bad at times, usually at dark and early evening. When the wind is blowing they are not a problem. They seem to have a demonstrated wind component of about 5 knots.

Hope we can have a good turnout of BCP people.

BTW, there is plenty for the women and girls to do, so feel free to bring them along too.

I hope to be there to see if those Minnesota mosquitos are as big as have been sighted in the Dakotas. Some of these bear the Angus Beef brand and we like to sneek out and tip them over come dark. Never stand behind when they demonstrate their wind component.

I will mark the calendar.

Dirtstrip;

The mosquitos may not be as big as yours, but they are like coyotes and travel in numbers. I was stationed in Dover, Delaware from 1961 to 1964. Delaware critters are much bigger than I have seen anywhere else. Had one land at DAFB one night and pumped 1000 gallons of JP-4 before we realized what it was. :shock:

One evening on the flightline I heard 2 of them talking hovering over me. One says "Lets take him over in the boonies and eat him" Other one said "No, if we do that the big ones will take him away from us" :^o

Alright, I am outta here.

Glidergeek;

Not tempted to join, but I did send an email to them giving the details of the area and the campout. Haven't gotten a reply back from them. Looks like their activities are high dollar affairs at big airports. We will see how they feel about slumming with one motor recip drivers.

Incidentally, I did forget to mention the Pope County Flyers who are the sponsors of the fly-in and campout, plus putting on the breakfast. A good, active group.

Gene Dotson, Wagonmaster for flying campers. How's that for an honorary title. No authority, just get to greet everyone when they arrive.

Hi All;

Thought I would bring this back to the list. Only 2 weeks to go.

Doing the annual on the Maule now and plan to be in Starbuck on the 30th. or Jul. 1. Really looking forward to meeting some BCP's there. Always a good time there.

Hello 25E,
I was looking on the MnDot Aviation web site and they
do not mention the July 4th flyin. Is the flyin on Monday
the 4th only, or is somthing goning on Saturday and Sunday.
I am hoping to stop in. Some info would be nice.
Thanks

Re: Jul 1 to 4, 2011 Starbuck, Minnesota Campout D32

Sorry it took so long to reply.

Pope County Flyers sponsor this event in conjunction with the town of Starbuck's Heritage Day celebration during the whole weekend. Many events around the area including sidewalk sales, marathon run, golf outing and meals served at the park.

The main fly-in date is on Saturday, if you come only for the day with breakfast and pilots eat free.

The camping will be anytime you want to come and most campers arrive on Friday and camp through the 4th. Complete facilities are available at the modern AD building. Fireworks display at the airport grounds.

Hope to see you there.
