Just bought me a Supercub!!

Done deal!! Long story on the buying process, but part of the deal was a major overhaul on the 0-320 engine, which is currently torn down and going through the overhaul process. The airplane is in great shape with recent fabric and paint, the only thing that was an unknown was the engine, now thats being addressed.

Can't wait to take delivery!!

Heres a pic of the plane, take a wild guess what I'm gonna replace first

Very nice. Still think the older Cubs are the nicest flying of the bunch.

Re: Just bought me a Supercub!!

Thanks all!

Bushwheels first!!!! =D> Most likely all three!

Its a pretty light airplane, current W/B says 1086, but who knows when its actually been weighed. I'll try to offset some of the bushwheel weight with the underseat battery mod, and maybe a lightweight alternator to replace the old generator.

Not much else initially, spend what little money I have left on gas and learn to fly the damn thing!!

Can't wait to do some more NorCal flying, and working on my own "central coast circuit" :D

Re: Just bought me a Supercub!!

Congrats!!!! Buying a super cub was one of the best decisions I ever made. Ive had more fun in my cub than all other airplanes Ive owned/flown combined! Also, I HIGHLY recommend the 35" bushwheels...

Normally I don't like J3 lightening bolts on PA 18's but that one looks good. Great looking ship. Put me in the jealous category.

Congratulations. 1086 is light but possible, mine is/was close to that on bushwheels.

Definitely bushwheels on all three, the fat/soft tail wheel really helps soften the bumps. When I added weight to mine I took some off too and the Oddesey battery is a great saver but think hard about moving it forward under the seat as the CG goes forward with it and it's in the way of servicing the brakes. My SC sounds pretty much like yours (well before I dinged it) guessing the CG is pretty neutral and in my opinion you should try to keep it there. Take a look at the Oddesey battery in the stock location, seems like I saved 15# and the install was easy using the hold down clamp from Spruce and removing the boat anchor box. Think how you're going to mostly fly, if just you and not much stuff then keeping the CG neutral to aft is a really good thing, mostly hauling a passenger and a bunch of stuff then save all the weight you can.

And if it's not too late and you/they have to put cylinders on it change to high compression cylinders assemblies and make her a 160... Very noticeable!

Re: Just bought me a Supercub!!

I took out that heavy wet battery & put the Odessey under the seat, and even tho I put in light starter & alternator, it's still a bit nose heavy. GoodThing for hauling weight, but since my horiz.stab. is (usually) trying to pull the tail down I think I'm getting a bit extra drag from back there.

Just changing the Gill to an Oddesey (same location) will keep your CG closer to where "it is now". (As per the 'Ol Crow! :)

Good point, I'll crunch the numbers before I make any moves there.

Highlander is gone! Sold it a few weeks ago when I decided to fly rather than build. I like the highlander and it was a fun project that kept my mind occupied during our spray season, but I knew I wouldn't finish it in time for the off-season, during which I really want to do some fun flying. The 140 was a great first taildragger and a fun airplane, but I've outgrown it's capabilities and want to really start exploring more off-airport places.

Now if I could just find a buyer for the 140, I'll be really happy  If I could have sold the 140 first, I might have been able to keep the Highlander...but something tells me ill be devoting most of my time to this cub for many years to come.

Re: Just bought me a Supercub!!

Bart,

I won the Atlee Dodge underseat battery box at the SuperCub flyin this year and don't need it. PM or call me 913-271-8733 with an offer if you would be interested. It's brand new and I would have to ship it from Kansas.
