Keep the ADF or not

My 182B came to me with following avionics:
King kx170B with glideslope
King kx155 with VOR
King KN 64 Digital DME
King KR 87 Digital ADF
King Audio Pannel (kind of old)
King marker beacon
STEC 50 Auto Pilot
PS Engineering PM1000 4 place intercom
King KT 76A Transponder

Have a Garmin 396 and am IFR non current

Kind of crouded in that pannel. Want to put in engine analyzer and fuel flow meter and need to redo a few things. To make more room I am thinking of scrapping the ADF and putting it on EBay

What think the host of experts in BCP

Tim,
You have to ask yourself if you use the ADF. Do you listen to AM radio?

http://www.allstar.fiu.edu/aero/ADF.htm

If all you need is room for an engine analyzer that is not much of a problem. The gauge is the standard hole size of small instruments.

I never use my ADF but so far it is not in the way because what I have has got me on long cross country trips. But if I needed room it would be gone simply because I don't use an ADF. Even to listen to AM radio it is in an out due to mountains.
That Garmin 396 is a fantastic navigation tool, weather tool and TIS tool.
I love mine!

The first thing I tore out of my 170 was the ADF.
Never used one in 50 some years of flying, and no intention of startin now.
I took it out partially because if I ever do need to do some form of flight examiner test, at least the damned thing will not be there for him to pester me with.
One less complcation for a simple minded member of the Old Farhts Club.

It is better to be late in this world, than early in the next.

I have never used them much and when I pulled the adf, tray, cabling, and antenna out of my Maule I gained almost 12 pounds of useful load. I'm not sure how many beers that equals but I'm certain someone on here does (maybe Gump).

I do know how many beers that is....

I have a King ADF in the C172TD, powered by the Mighty O-300, and on these hot Summer days that 12 pounds really hurts, but... I have a real soft spot for ADF's. That's all we had up north when I started flying up there, and over the years the NDB approach always got me home in some gawd awful weather, and we came to understand each other really, really well.

I never use the one in this airplane, XM radio takes care of the in-flight entertainment, but that ADF will always be sitting there ready to go if I ever need it.

Scrap that ADF and put in its place an IFR capable GPS. I hope to never do an ADF approach again. But, a gps overlay of an ADF approach? Allright!

Yeah, probably the best advice.... ADF is a friggin' boat anchor and the moving map GPS magic. No comparison.

I'm no expert, but if I were going to do a little tidy up job on your bird, I'd lose everything but the 155, intercom, and transponder. But that's just me, I don't have any business flying IFR do to my lack of currency, unless I'm a passenger on the airlines. :D Get two gps units if redundancy is a factor for you.

Our old 180 has a panel full of crap in it placed randomly here and there as many of the old ones are. I don't use most of it, always wanted to gut it and gain a little more useful.

For sure keeping the 170B with glideslope. No intention to do hard IFR stuff but when in So Cal, it is nice to be able to drop through a layer into Van Nuys.

I have noticed that the ADF gets about 500 bucks on Ebay so sombody must think they are neat.

After only listening to talk radio, I finally got rid of mine in the 185 last year. Never used it once in seven years.

My dad has a story of being a kid in my grandfather's Commanche, flying into Missoula in a rapidly developing thunderstorm. I don't know how he knows this, since he was just a kid, but he said old grandpa had an AM station that he knew was in town tuned in on the ADF, and tracked that in.

Imagine how magical the pioneers of aviation (and Gump) thought the NDB's were. Like when the first radio ranges were put into service.

I ripped the ADF out of my plane at the first annual. Probably should have played with it more. As it is, I've only used them in Flight Sim.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

ADF to ebay

Tim:

My 58 Skylane came with about the same avionics set up. After a couple of years I yarded it all out and put in an Apollo GX60, SL30 and a SL10 audio panel. I did keep the KX76A. I never used the ADF and the GPS will replicate the GPS function if ever needed. Took out 50+ pounds and put back 10 pounds. Sold the lot on ebay... happy buyers and even more happy me!

I made a new panel with the T layout and a center stack above the controls. I have the panel template if you are thinking about doing that.

The truth will set you on the path to being free

Like gump, I have a soft spot for ADF. For years the only thing that worked in AK. You could home in on North Pole with it's 50,000 watt power, from about anywhere, to find your way home, and listen to Trapline Chatter to get all the 'bush' gossip, messages, and even know of your next load when you got back to Fbx.
But I'd take it out now even though I had to do a back course ADF approach into Eielson to pass my IFR checkride.
