KGWS closed, again

Glenwood Springs municipal airport is to be closed once again. This time the city rulers decided it was necessary to hold a drive through high school graduation ceremony there.
It is closed 6 pm Friday through 1 pm Saturday. Just perfect enough timing to ruin a weekend of good flying weather. May 29,30

I’ll admit I was a little offended when we were all asked to donate our time to spruce up the airport for the event, even more offended when we were all asked to participate in a flyby during the ceremony. Needless to say, I will not be participating in a flyby over a congested area with a bunch of different aircraft with pilots of varying skills in a somewhat narrow mountain valley during mid day.

I predicted the city would close the airport again, I am a little surprised that it wasn’t even 30 days later.

Come on , throw the seniors a bone. They are getting screwed out of a lot this year. Sure a closed airport can be inconvenient sometimes but why not just spruce up the airport on occasion without being asked instead of getting offended when they are looking for help to get it looking good for these kids? From 6 until 1 the next day? Ok. Offended again by being asked for a fly by ?

Re: KGWS closed, again

I already volunteer my time.
I pick rocks out if our grass runway, I plow the runway and taxi ways with my own fuel and truck. I help out with the airport fundraiser.

The flyby? I’d have to move my plane a half hour west before 6pm Friday, then get a ride back to my car, then the next day I’d have to drive an hour to get to my plane. And then get another ride to go get my car and drive home an hour.
I’m no expert, but I believe the far’s wouldn’t allow a flyby under 1000’ agl.

They could have the ceremony at the mall, it’s bigger and closed, or one of the several parks.

Thus is not about anything more than the city closing the airport because they can.

Re: KGWS closed, again

An FAA funded airport needs permission from FAA before they can close the airport for any non-aviation use or reason.
Have they jumped through all the hoops?
I'm all for throwing the kids a bone, but I also get StillLearning's frustration.
And wanting you to spend your time sprucing up a publicly owned airport where you're based
is kind of a buncha BS if your rent/lease payments are anything like what we pay at ours.
Isn't that what airport revenue is supposed to be for?

Curious about what was apparently another, earlier airport closure not long ago--
why, and for how long?

Re: KGWS closed, again

We have had great results from contacting the FAA when the airport manager or city has tried to make rules or close the airport for certain occasions such as COVID or because the airport manager is in a bad mood. Tattle telling has worked surprisingly well...

Re: KGWS closed, again

Previous closure was 6 weeks. Under the guise of public safety, so us aviators couldn’t spread the virus.

I don’t have any issue cleaning up and doing maintenance on the airport. I do pay $500 per year, I think, for access fees. I take offense to being asked to donate my time to spiff up the airport so it looks great while closed.

The city has been trying to close the airport for years, they are met with significant resistance, but keep spending money on studies for how to use the property when there is no longer an airport.

The city doesn’t like us making noise and enjoying flying, but requests us to do a fly over to show support for the graduates. Seems a bit odd to me.
