KTOA to Lake Cachuma, CA (amphib)

Planning to fly with Mary to Lake Cachuma near San Ynez, next week.

Would love to jump into nice cool cool water and take a swim. Recharge the stoke of Summer time.

Will have lunch at http://flight126cafe.com in Santa Paula enroute to San Ynez.

You won’t be swimming in Lake Cachuma. It’s the water supply of Santa Barbara so no contact allowed. But you can fish it, or just boat around. Santa Barbara is where I was born and raised.

Me too. I caught a lot of crawdads at lake Cachuma when I was a kid. Look forward to seeing the pics.

That’s cool. I left Santa Barbara to move to Boise because of the excellent fly-fishing. I learned to fly in Boise and my long cross-country for my private pilot license was from Boise to Santa Ynez where my folks lived.

Re: KTOA to Lake Cachuma, CA (amphib)

My folks are still in Lompoc. Also have a sister there and a brother in Santa Maria. I still fly down and usually end up landing at Santa Ynez because of the marine layer in LPC. It's a cool place to visit and see family but I'm glad I don't live there anymore. I miss the beach. I think Z said he trained there (IZA) for his PPL too!

Sorry for a little thread drift Ted! Fly safe and take us along for the ride!

My Uncle was a fly fishing guide/instructor in Santa Barbara for years. He moved to Florida for the bonefish and Tarpon.

Cool. What was his name? I was born there in '55 and left around '80.

What is the status of seaplanes there? No info on SPA Water Landing Directory. They appear to have a quarantine in effect for quagga mussels.

Re: KTOA to Lake Cachuma, CA (amphib)

Glad I posted the preliminary flight plan to get feed back.

I was told a few years ago seaplanes were OK ... Wrong! Anyway, good input folks! Will definitely research further.

Thank you for the guidance!

Stay out of water!

Body contact activities such as swimming, wading, or water skiing in Lake Cachuma have been restricted since the park opened in the 1950s, reasoning that the lake was a reservoir people depend upon for drinking water. In May 2011, the no body contact regulation was revised to allow human-powered recreational watercraft such as kayaks and canoes on the lake as well as allow dogs on boats and eliminate "incidental body contact" with the water as a punishable offense.[3]

Be careful not to pull on the collective handle on the Scout, Ted. Doesn’t work the same way[emoji1]

My Uncle, the black sheep of the family like me, lives in Lompoc. He ran the Search and Rescue team for years back in the day.

Can't speak for seaplane use or how much water is in the lakes but you might look at Lake Nacimiento, Lake San Antonio, and Lake Lopez. They are fairly close by to Cachuma and do allow you to swim etc.

It sure is a small world: I graduated from UCSB, worked in Santa Barbara for a while, and owned a house in Lompoc.

[Like a dummy I sold the house and moved away years ago, and I miss the wonderful Southern California weather every day.]

Don’t believe I ever met your Uncle Rex, bummer, weren’t too many avid fly-fishermen in SB at the time.

Can’t argue that Santa Barbara has some of the best weather in the world, and sure is beautiful, but no regrets that I left it when CA lost its mind. Still have other family members in Madera. And I do miss fishing the Cottonwood Creek, Owens River, Hot Creek, the Little Truckee.

AND the BEST and ONLY sour sourdough bread in the world at the bakery in Bishop. Yum!!!!!

OK. However, I will be careful not to end up in hot water! Will research very carefully.
