Labor Day Weekend - Aug 30th - Sept. 2nd 2013

Is anything special happening Labor day weekend in the western US? Our other plans fell through so we decided to just load the plane and takeoff. Thinking about heading Rob's direction camping at Nehalem Bay or PC. We would hit Pacific City and Tillamook (Evergreen Museum) and ? Rob, are you going to be around?

Any other thoughts or ideas on destinations or activities? Idahomauledriver, OsoLoco or Coyote Ugly, do you want to join us? Anyone one else want to meet up somewhere? Rose and our 17-yr old son will be with me.

Destination is still wide open at this point. We are also considering N Idaho and NW Montana if we can avoid smoke.

I will be out and about if the weather is cooperative. We were going to go to the San Juan Islands, but might stay a little closer to home (Oregon)

Nehalem Bay is a good possibility.

There is a small chance I will be in PC with a drop in at Nehalem Bay on Sunday/Monday.

Seems like it would be a blast.

Re: Labor Day Weekend - Aug 30th - Sept. 2nd 2013

Thanks everyone for the responses. Sounds like Nehalem or San Juan's is where it is happening. Hard to beat either one of those so I'll keep you posted on our plans. One consideration for us is keeping a 17-yr old entertained for the weekend so if anyone has suggestions that may decided it. Evergreen Aviation Museum one day and another day at or near the beach is what we are thinking if we go to Nehalem. It has been so long since we've been to the San Juan's I really don't know what there is to keep him entertained there? An thoughts for either destination? At least he likes airplanes!

Thanks,
Mike

Good luck hunting; that sounds like a blast literally! We'll just have to catch up with you at the races.

There's a fairly decent airshow and fly-in in Steamboat Springs that weekend. Quite a few of us are headed that way.
A lot of other things going on in town the same weekend. Should be nice weather.

Thanks S-12. We hadn't considered going East and wanted to avoid the heat but Steamboat is high enough to stay cool I would guess. I've always wanted to visit and have a friend there. It is looking more and more like a coastal destination for us so far however. We haven't seen the ocean in far too long. I'll keep everyone posted on where we are going before we launch.

Coastal wx is looking a little iffy (possible fog on saturday) so you may want to have an inland backup available. I'm around all day on friday for consultation 8)

Mike,
If Wellton's a viable back up plan to the costal fog you're welcome and encouraged here as well! No need to plan ahead, just call inbound. As IDMaule pointed out it is the dove opener, and the Yuma area is home to many 'big breast' contests =D> Not so much Milo this year, but the doves don't seem to know or care. They are here, and boat loads of eurasian doves as well (which have no limit).

We'll be contributing our share of lead and noise, and Coleen has a game feast planned for the hunters afterwards.

Should be good shooting.
Take care, Rob

Re: Labor Day Weekend - Aug 30th - Sept. 2nd 2013

I am going to amend my weekend plan for Stehekin, WA. The weather is supposed to be very nice on that side of the Cascades. The camping is 1/4 mile from the strip, but it is right on the river. They have gear carts for moving stuff. There is a shuttle down in the little village that will pick people up for food or lodging. Anyone who is put off by the potential foul weather on the coast is encouraged to come meet up. The numbers (low elevation, long runway) make it look like an easy place to go, but it is not a beginners strip for several reasons.

But won't it be about 9000 degrees in Welton?

Be sure to check the visibility at Stehekin. There are a bunch of fires in area and if there is a wind from the south the smoke gets into the Lake Chelan valley and hangs there.

If you go and camp, take LOTS of bug spray. The mosquitoes in the camping area are really hungry.

Land upstream (away from the lake) if possible. It is uphill and the upper part of the runway can be pretty rocky at the end of the summer.

Have fun.

There is a nice hiking trail from the south end of the runway. It takes you next to the river and all the way to the lake if you want.

Rob,

That's a fantastic offer and very tempting so thanks. It would be great to hunt with you and to hang with you and Coleen plus enjoying her game feast. I think we'd all like to know more about the 'big breasts" contestants, too! Or did you mean the birds? Can we take a rain check for like anytime from December through about April  ? Yuma is definitely on the radar screen for later this year so it will be great to plan something for when it cools off. Its been between 95 to 100 here for most of the summer which we are hoping to escape.

Besides Z has plans for a NW shindig and may be looking to get even with you if we defect now... Since you're packing a shotgun, he may let it slide though.

Cheers,
Mike

Thanks TD! Will bring bug spray. The webcams have been showing pretty clear skies around Stehekin. I will be watching closely, ready to change plans if necessary, but the weather is supposed to be really good. Looks like lots of good steep hikes in the area.

We are bailing on camping this weekend, some of the McMinnville group my be there?
The rains are not far off here in the NW and I'm behind at work and at home.
We can maybe do a day trip depending on where everyone ends up.
