Why would Bonneville salt flats be wet already when there has been no rain. Just flew over it yesterday and it looked really wet.

Also on the way home I flew low over a little dry ( I think) lake that I was not sure of. Wanted to land real bad. It was in the mt range just east of Cedarvile, CA on the Nevada-CAl border. Saw a few wild horses on it. Can you figure that if a horse can cross it without sinking how a bout 182.

I made the mistake of driving off the freeway one time out onto the salt flats. I thought "hey this is the place where land speed records are set, I'm gonna drive out there and go fast and relish the openness."

If you've ever been out there, then you probably know why I spent the next 2 hrs within about 300 feet of the freeway, collecting debris and retread to line my tracks for extra traction. 4wd was useless. The stuff is like grease.

Big rigs were honking at me mockingly as they drove past. It was like being on stage for all who drove by to laugh at.

If you are asking, you probably shouldn't.

How much do you like flying? How much do you like your airplane? Why put those things at risk? Simply not worth it.

There are lots of places to land an airplane. Lake beds are not tempting to me anymore. I cured myself of that by hearing about other airplanes flipped on their back - or watching them flip. Not fun.

Steer clear. Don't be tempted, even with big tires. Yes, some get away with it, but what guys are saying about crust - soooo true! Stay WELL clear of Utah salt flats!!
