Re: Lake Hood Terminal Procedures

Squash, how can you find out beforehand if there is transient spots available there? Thought I read on here somewhere that they are typically full.

Cam, when you coming up?

Re: Lake Hood Terminal Procedures

I am not aware of a really good method for determining availability other than asking someone to check prior to your arrival.

Yes, the spots can get taken, but that is usually during the airmens trade show when there are a lot of visitors flying in. I have never had a problem finding a spot there at other times. The whole alpha parking area is quite large, and if I were stopping through to pick up someone at the international terminal, I would not hesitate to just pull the plane off to the side somewhere out of the way for an hour and set the parking brake.

If you definitely need a spot for a few days and don't need the proximity to the terminal for pick up/ drop off purposes, then you can always look for additional spots at the lake hood strip.

Re: Lake Hood Terminal Procedures

Is the airspace complex? Yes
Will it be busy June/July? Definitely
Are the controllers helpful? Absolutely!!

One time, coming back to Lake Hood strip from Talkeetna with a slightly unnerving engine vibration that turned out to be a torn landing gear fairing right under my feet, I reached Point Mackenzie. I told the controller that I had a questionable engine vibration and I would like to cross the water a bit higher than usual. He said I could pick whatever altitude I wanted and did I want any "equipment" deployed to the strip. I declined but was really glad someone was on my side. (Also, really glad my problem was fixed with duct tape after I landed.)

It can get really busy in summer. Do not snooze anywhere near this airspace. The arrival rate can result in stepped-on transmissions and a missed call can send you head-on into a hornet's nest over Tudor overpass. You don't need to ask how I know this.

Transient parking at Lake Hood strip consists of exactly three tiedowns. Taxiing over to ANC would be good advice. However, if you are going to hang around the strip longer, the lady who rules the tiedown area was able to fix me up with a front and center tiedown for the summer because she knew EVERYONE who had switched from wheels to floats for the season. What a fantastic place!

Re: Lake Hood Terminal Procedures

I called airport operations prior to launching. He was driving by and reported three spots open. Followed Squash's procedures above to the letter. To get the rental back to the airplan you have to continue out from the terminal until you can make a left on postmaster.

Also, I had trouble with the gate. You have to transmit the 3 click rather quickly on 121.75

What a great thread of information. It really paid off in stress level having read

Good to hear, thanks for sharing how it went for someone else new to the airstrip.

Re: Lake Hood Terminal Procedures

Outstanding explanation, thank you.

Squash wrote:Glad you will make the trip to lake hood to pick up your dad. Here are some additional tips.

After landing, you will want to taxi around the west side of the lake. This will require you to pass through a gate (121.75 I believe x 3 clicks - but just follow the directions on the sign) to enter the lakeshore taxiway. The taxiway is not controlled so once on the ground after landing you don't need to talk with ground. As I mentioned before, you will want to taxi to victor taxiway that leads to ANC international. Take a right onto Victor, cross the road for cars and then take a left into the GA parking and go to the far south end where transient is located. This is called Alpha parking.

From the alpha parking after secured, walk westward through the lot until you hit the guardrail that separates you from a curved road called Postmark Drive. Step over the guard rail and cross Postmark Drive toward a road that looks like it has a small cut through to the left to allow access to the main road entering the terminal. Once across Postmark Drive, don't take this left cut through to the main terminal entrance but instead continue straight on the smaller service road (Tower rd?) that parallels the main terminal road. This way you will have plenty of room for safe walking.

If you follow Tower Rd? It will bend slightly to the left as it heads toward the terminal. You could walk outside as the road bends further left and end up outside the baggage terminal. Or you could continue walking westward toward the enclosed walkway that joins the north and south terminals. Just walk to one of the doors and enter the walkway. Turn left and walk down the hall until you arrive inside the baggage area.

Take a look on google earth as this can be helpful to get your head around where the parking is in relation to the taxiways and the international airport. Good luck.

Wondering what all this looks like?

Was great to meet jugheadF15. Hood and ANC controllers are very friendly, as are the pilots at Hood (two came over to try and help me locate transient parking when they spotted me going round and round-and they did).

Thanks Phil. That is a very helpful video for those of us who are contemplating landing there for the first time.

Re: Lake Hood Terminal Procedures

I was flying out by the flats to day and decided to hop on to the LHD radio and just listen. Lots of chatter but controllers had to help a few people that were "unfamiliar"

And, that is key......if you're not sure, tell the controllers that you're not familiar with the airspace. They are a great and very helpful bunch, and will make every effort to keep you out of trouble.

Again, understand that there are several flavors of airspace here, including Part 93 airspace, which many pilots are not familiar with. Part 93 specifies sectors AND altitudes, and violations of those altitudes are (supposed to be) filed. If you're not sure, ask. If you don't like the altitude restriction for some reason (low over the Inlet, etc) ask for a waiver of Part 93 altitude. They'll frequently approve that.

It is very complex airspace, but with a little effort on your part it's easy to navigate. But don't ignore the 93 rule.
