Landes On....Panties Gone!!

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

I have a question, what brakes do you have? Dual or single piston, and if there single how does it stop? I have been told that the single is not sufficent with 800X6.

I have single puck Clevelands. They make plenty of stopping power for me. I can slide them on dirt if I have to, however, I try not to. Making tight turnarounds, the inside wheel will lock up and drag with moderate brake pedal pressure.

I haven't skidded them on pavement, simply because I haven't had to brake that hard on a paved runway. Usually anything with an improved surface is long and wide (comparatively) and I still use my same short field landing procedures anyway. Most of the time its light braking or even adding power to taxi.

In general, I believe the single pucks are plenty sufficient for the 800s.

The 800s do enunciate a louder "Chirp" landing on pavement than the 600s. :D

There you have it....

Just curious...Did this plane have wheel pants or not. I ran mine with and without pants with the 600s and really didn't notice any difference then either.

I have the pants, but they were not on for this flight. I really don't use them anymore. Hard to air up and did not offer any better speed when they were on.

Flying is dangerous. If you think otherwise, you are new at this sport. Mind the gravity not the gap.

I will echo both points. I would have take the outside bolt loose just to add air, and apparently they weren't cleaning up any drag.

Thanks for the validation efforts. =D>

Re: Landes On....Panties Gone!!

I used single-puck brakes w/8.50's on my '56 182 and could easily lock them up on pavement.

Re: Landes On....Panties Gone!!

OK guys, I am a new member but have been following this blog site for a long time. I took interest in this thread and it caused me to order a new fork and tires for my 1959 182B.

I ordered the Airglass fork and elected to put 850's on the mains and an 800 on the nose. Just got the parts in this week so we will be doing the install next week and a test flight shortly after that :D.

As mentioned earlier, this is not a cheap upgrade but considering I had 600's on the mains and a 500 on the nose I hoping to see significant improvement, including some prop clearance. I will post some pictures when I get it done, is it July yet?

Re: Landes On....Panties Gone!!

Congratulations on the Fork, both of you. I had my 172 upgraded last spring and have been pretty happy, though I did see a 5-8mph speed drop. I put a 7.00 on the nose but wonder if an 8.00 would have been better. No complaints so far and the extra prop clearance is great.

Congratulations on taking the plunge. =D> I have no doubt that you will be happy with the results that you will see. I have flown about 20hrs with my new setup and still :D every time I see my new nose wheel. The way it handles the bumps on the ground is night and day difference from the 5.00/6.00s. My prop clearance was increased by about 6". You wont be disappointed.....and get those pictures up, too.

By the way, I helped my A&P from start to finish with the install. It's all still pretty fresh on my mind, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask. I will do my best to help.

Hey DBI, I just looked at your photo gallery and realized we have already seen your plane in the photo shoot "Straight Tail in the Tetons." Someone here (Vick) actually found it and posted a thread with a link to the magazine article.

Awesome Job!! And Awesome Plane!! =D>

Re: Landes On....Panties Gone!!

Yes- you are correct that was my airplane featured in the article "Straight Tail in the Tetons". I had a friend of mine w/ a 206 remove his back door and put a photographer in the back wearing a harness (yes it is an FAA approved system). We flew a couple of formations flights around the Tetons and snapped the photos right at daybreak. It is one of those times when the light and conditions are just perfect and well the results are amazing :D To bad I did not have my new wheels and tires on for the photo shoot....patience. Thanks for nice comments :D

Kougarok over on Supercub posted this. Make sure you read the last line
I just talked to Chris at Norland. There IO470 conversion sounds interesting! There is a derelict 310 on our field with IO470's. Anyone interested in doing the Norland STC. I would make a really good deal on the first one!

Oh yeah! And there is another McCauley with a fatter blade that he has approved that wasn't previously approved for the 180. You can also use the longer prop on the 182 if heavy duty gear is installed to provide ground clearance. I am salivating!

I used 800-6 Michelins all the way around. I figured 800s would be the best compromise for semi-rough strips and not lose too much cruise speed. To my surprise, I had zero measurable difference in cruise speed. Trued out 135 kts at 23"/2300. Exactly what it did with the pants and little tires. I'll testify that its true..."Those old style pants were just for looks, not for speed."

Landing was surely a pleasure, too. My runways are far from perfect, but the fat tire up front made a huge difference. I'm accustomed to landing a little nose high anyways, so I didn't have to make that adjustment. I made about 8 landings and lots of taxiing/turning to check it out. Awesome.

One of the biggest benefits of the whole thing is the added prop clearance. Mine went from 9" to 15 1/2". That is huge to me for not so smooth ground operations.

To any nose draggers considering this modification, I would highly recommend it....if you really need it. Its probably not the cheapest thing you can do to a plane.

Ross I know that 182 -came from PHX area -used to fly into Boulder City several times a month. Previous owner worked for BLM and went out to "field sites " with Helicopter based here .

You're right Bill. I bought the plane out of Deer Valley (Phoenix). This Friday (12/9) will be my 2 year anniversary of bringing it home from AZ. I'm reminded as I mailed my insurance premium today. The previous owner was a govt dam inspector and covered a lot of lakes in that area. Maybe some day we can venture back out that way again and make a circle with some of you guys.
