Wondering how long it will take FAA to process a new landing area proposal. I know it takes them 60 days or more just to register an airplane, and a landing area proposal is a more complicated proposition. Anybody get one filed and approved lately? How long before FAA gave you their initial response?

All the FAA does with regard to private airports is chart them, really. Obviously, if you park one in the middle of a subdivision, you've got other problems.....

But, largely, the time consuming issue is getting the airstrip on the current charts.

Having the FAA involved in "recognizing" your strip is a good thing, as it may help if someone tries to install a huge tore/wind turbine, etc right off the departure end.

I don't know how long that process takes, but in general, the FAA doesn't much care where you land your airplane, unless of course, it's located in a really bad spot. For perspective, there are at least a dozen private strips within one Class D surface area that I know of, some charted (and FAA "recognized") others not, though they're not secret....

If you're near GFK, give Pete Schumacher a call...he teaches at UND and owns a private strip SW of GFK. Check out faculty directory online for UND. Pete's a friendly, and I'm sure he can give you info.

Thanks for the info MTV. I did this once before some years ago and was wondering if the process had changed. The FAA does a formal airspace analysis for all landing area proposals. Seems like last time it took about a year to hear initial comments from the FAA ADO, and then once the site was acknowledged by FAA, they gave me the option of requesting it appear on the sectional chart or to leave it off the chart. The best reason to show it on the chart is developers looks at the charts when planning wind farms, etc. So you are spot on for the reason to record the landing area.

I filed a 7480-1 for my new landing area proposal with FAA in early December, and if it's anything like last time, I will have the grass wore off my landing strip and long forgotten about the FAA by the time they respond. Thanks for the reply.

3 months for the first part, then it goes to Washington DC from your local FSDO, That's a never never land of phone calls never returned!!

It took over one year to get mine approved and on the charts. They required an inspection. An FAA person drove all the way here from Spokane and walked the runway with me. They were looking for approach or departure hazards. They also asked about how close the schools were. Watch for deer on my landing.

If you put it on the sectional, they will come. Lots of spray strips are not on the map for that reason.

That is true, and I've found that even if its not on the chart it gets spotted by some pilot soon enough. Word of mouth does the rest.

Where is this strip going in at? Skydive206 has a tread back in the files of putting his strip in. you might want to look it up.

This strip is going in about a dozen miles east of Bismarck, ND.

Getting my strip on a sectional isn't very important to me. The fact I have filed my strip with FAA meets the give notice requirement, and with it now at least entered into FAA's records that would help if I need to deal with a developer someday.

What do you know, FAA completed the airspace determination on my proposed landing strip! Now I'm legal. Lol.
