Landing at Fields Station, OR

Can anyone tell me if you can taxi from the dirt strip to the fuel pump at Fields, or if you want to pump direct, do you have to land on the highway. Just trying to save the tires. I also noticed on GoogleEarth a small dirt road behind the station, NW. Is that doable? Never been there.

Thanks all.

Re: Landing at Fields Station, OR

Fields is in Oregon so therefore it has Ethanol in the gas. Denio Junction is a few miles south and is in Nevada so it may be Eth free. http://www.airnav.com/airport/E85 read the coments.

Re: Landing at Fields Station, OR

Thanks, Denio is on my list as well, just gathering info. I have no problem burning E10 on a cross-country. It runs fine, motor (Rotax 912S) is "approved" for E10, etc.

My real question is whether I can land on dirt and taxi to the pump at Fields. ?

Re: Landing at Fields Station, OR

The road that joins the airstrip goes through a gate. I can't say how tall the posts are high or apart. A high wing might make it, but I doubt a low wing would.

On a related subject: some years ago I started flying with a small pair of decent binoculars. A passenger lucky enough to get a ride (and cute enough) brought a pair, and I assumed they would not "work", be too jiggly etc. To my surprise they worked great, of course it was glass smooth air. I can imagine some state of the art stabilized ones (http://www.wmjmarine.com/sib1640gr.html) would work real well!

In the right conditions, flying over some small town in perfect air at the right altitude, the amount of detail to be seen is amazing. More to the point of this thread, they are useful for checking out off airport landing sites and/or gas stations without having to get low. I have used mine to determine the best priced gas in town, reading the posted prices from the air. And yes I am that cheap

Hey Emmet, you're cheating by figuring all this out ahead of time! And we need to talk about burning E10 in our planes..........

Re: Landing at Fields Station, OR

I didn't realize there was a dirt strip at Fields. Thought you guys were just landing on the road. I've not been there, but I didn't get that from the discussion of having a fly-in there in another thread a few months ago. Where is it? I'm looking at Google Earth and not seeing it. Oh, I just found an aircraft just to the east of the highway split south of town. Is that it? For those of you familiar with it, can you give approximate length and width? This is some place I'd like to check out this year.

Thanks!

Tom - sorry, I like to have my shit situated. Occupational hazard. As for E10, you wanna wait for the campfire, or let it fly here?

Re: Landing at Fields Station, OR

If E-10 is approved for your plane and motor then you have it made.

Fields Station has a web site: http://fieldsoregon.com/default.aspx

It shows a C-170 at the fuel pumps.

Call them up and ask them the protocol.

I've been able to pretty much dodge the whole E10 mogas issue, flying as I do mostly in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. I did buy some of that lead getter outer (Decalin ?) when I burned a few gallons of Av gas last year on the way to and from Copperstate. Mainly because I was uneducated on E10.

I am ready to be educated on the issue emflys, hey I guess if you show up at Johnson Creek whilst burning it, nuff said!! I need more info, and it sounds like someone burning it for a while, in the same type of plane no less, will be the way to get it. I will be easy to persuade, as it will sure simplify xc's, and save dough too.

Google earthing landing sites, using forums for pre check outs of fuel sites.....man it just seems like yesterday we'd just takeoff and work it out as we went! I flew to Oshkosh and back in '88, and NEVER burned any AV gas, much fun was had by hitting the small town strips with nearby gas stations, kind of like getting off the interstate and taking the back roads. I find myself using google earth more and more to find my crane jobs...I guess I could use it for the plane trips :D

Re: Landing at Fields Station, OR

Just got off the phone with Fields Station. He said airplanes come in their frequently for fuel. There is a dirt strip about 3000ft long that is located near the school or the highway is available also. They are open Mon-Sat 8-6 and 9-5 on Sunday. They have a Cafe open during these hours also. The only kicker I see is they only carry 87 Octane fuel. My two stroke needs 91 Octane because you loose a couple octane points after it's mixed with the oil. Maybe I can just dump in some octane boost for that leg or something.

My plane is approved for 87 mogas. Does their mogas have ethanol?

Re: Landing at Fields Station, OR

We've landed at Fields many times, walking from the dirt airstrip over to the gas station. I remember looking at the gate and the fenceposts and thinking my Maule will not fit through here. If you land on the road, look out for the sheriff or State cop. One weekend we were there in the fall, they were busting a pot growing operation up in the hills. And the lady that owns the restaurant said it would probably be a bad idea to land on the road with all the cops. If there are no cops around, I don't think anybody cares. She makes great hamburgers and milkshakes!

We landed at Denio Junction 2 weekends ago. There are 2 runways, both dirt. The N-S look to be used the most. They say mostly by 4-wheelers, so look out for kids. Strip was good and hard. You could easily taxi to the gas pumps, but don't know if they super? It is gas, cafe, motel and hard liquor bar. We had a great breakfast there! Their ph# 775-941-0171.

Looking forward to Johnson Creek Fly-In. Hope to arrive on Wed., work permitting :!:

Re: Landing at Fields Station, OR

Thanks for the info on Fields. Hopefully we'll get a chance to go check it out this summer.

Glad to hear you all are going to make JC this year. Can't wait to meet you all/see you all again.
