About time someone gets a stiff sentence.

Good he got busted, but it seems some of the issues were stretched a little, he shined a flashlight at a cop and that showed a pattern? Uhh

Been lasered a few times, mostly just annoying, outside of you staring at the laser which I don’t know why you’d do, IMHO seems like it should be like a steep fine outside of real damage being done

I’ve had more close calls trying to drive by police who are on the side of the road late night with all their dang LEDs on blinding everyone

I tend to agree - it sounds harsh - but then again, he did laser a police helicopter long enough for them to find him, sounds like a lot... Not to mention a severe lack of consideration / common sense.

What's the best case scenario from getting lasered? Finding it mildly irritating? How about the worst case? Blinding the pilots of an airliner on approach and crashing? What would your reaction be to getting lasered driving on the freeway at night? People doing this know the risks involved to the recipient, choose to do it anyway, and deserve the consequences for deliberately assaulting others.

Re: Laser pointing results in 2 year stint behind bars

Some really smart engineer is going to come up with some type of window coating or film that can block laser pointers with out changing normal visibility and make lots of money selling that to the airliners.

When I got my plane back - the very first flight I had with the instructor (getting me back in flying shape), actually the instructor was a Backcountry pilot member - Jughead - we ended up getting a late start and we were doing pattern work at RHV at night, and 2 planes reported getting lit up by a laser. We listened as the tower got info from them, and then about 2-3 minutes later we had to make room for the police chopper - they got locations info from the pilots, and the were coordinating with ground units - I thought there is no way that guy is going to be dumb enough to stick around... just about that time the police chopper radioed the tower that they got the guy, and asked them to have the two pilots stick around to give statements. The funniest thing was the cheer from Jughead when the chopper radioed that they caught him :) Never underestimate the dumbness of people.

Has there ever been a crash from a some yahoo pointing his ebay laser at a plane?

I’ve been hit a half dozen times in my career, mildly annoying best describes it, and if you turn your exterior lights off for a minute I’ve never had one be able to re-acquire

All for justice, but not hysteria

The other issue, as others have pointed out, these people you read about doing this tend to be poorly bred and likely have a near legally retarded IQ level, I wouldn’t be surprised if they honestly didn’t know how annoying their actions are, 2yrs in prison had I been on the jury on that case I’d have nullified, a fine and mandatory classes and a ban from owning a laser sure
