Lets see your water landings or departures

Its seems like a "white elephant" conversation but lets see em if you got em. I am certain there is a conversation here to be had about water landings. My intention for this topic is to NOT have folks go out and try it because it looks easy. Make certain to know your own limitations and regs.

Re: Lets see your water landings or departures

Skiing up to a gravel bar landing.....no big deal. Taking off a gravel bar so short you are absolutely dependant on having enough speed up to start skiing while you get the last bit of speed to get airborne is a bigger deal by far!

I only have done the former once, when a certain Maule from Utah was annoying me by making all the bars I was, and making it look easy, so I had to up the ante a bit  On that takeoff I was thinking probably not a good idea to make a habit of this, though it went fine and was fun. It did get that Maule off my ass also. =D>

Somewhat the aerodynamic equivalent of doing wheelies on a motorcycle, fun, good to know how, but seems to be of limited use, for me anyway. I do hit the water about every 5 th bar landing, just for the hell of it, but to go out of my way to land a short enough bar to force me to ski off on takeoff, I'll try and avoid, I get enough thrills on dry (very dry here right now) land.

And, every once in a while you have to swim to shore.....and if you post THAT on a web forum, I'm guessing, like the last time, the FAA will come to visit.....

Duh.

Not really a landing or departure. More of a low altitude fly by.

If I ever need to swim to shore I think I will just go down with the ship to save my own sanity, marriage and everything else you can think of...

Here is a photo of the Coyote using a bit of water on takeoff...

I know some of you out there have some good water photos...lets see em...

Now that is a real "do not try this at home photo"!! =D> =D> Thats what I am talking about Terry! Nice work. Would like to know more. Did they ride all three or just the mains? Touch down just prior to shore is did they surf for a bit?

I am sure that picture will stir up some dirt. It is legal!!!

Nice work!

175 Magnum-

Here is an old thread with some "not so good endings"

http://www.backcountrypilot.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=274

I find it interesting that after looking at a number of various flying sites (not the thread above) that a lot of folks claim you MUST use your brakes when skiing. This is just not so and makes me wonder if those commenting have ever really done it.

No brakes are needed, just airspeed. Well its actually ground speed that counts. Don't land down river unless you take in the speed / movement of the current. It has its own ground speed.

Re: Lets see your water landings or departures

Yeah, and don't forget a headwind ( or tailwind) is another factor.

Also, waterfowl can really add to the fun, especially if they are not paying attention!

Re: Lets see your water landings or departures

Good eyes on the elevator. The scout went in backwards when a big dust devil hit the tail and turned it 90 degrees, then rolled down the bank.
