Light Weight Starters

Hi guys, it's me again, need some information on starters. Thinking of buying a light weight starter, Sky Tec, Lamar or a B & C. not for sure which one yet. Want to get some feed back from the group. Do any of you guys or gals have any experience with any of these starters, pro or con. I have the O-470-J engine on my 180 with the heavy Delco-Remey starter. Any information greatly appreciated. Thanks :D :D

You'll need to probably change out the starter adapter also. Lightweight high torque starters engage and disengage the started adapter differently than the standard Prestolite starter. The two must be paired together. Talk to any shop that overhauls starter adapters, one of the best is Sacramento Sky Ranch. http://www.sacskyranch.com/ Call and talk to them, they'll be happy to answer your questions.

Sky Tec

I put a Sky Tec on my O-470L about a year and a half ago. Seems to be working well after 50 hours. Spins up better, I have forgotten the weight loss. I don't recall any adapter either? Original starter was AFU, so was getting a new one and the light weight Sky Tec wasn't that much more. Bought it through Chief. However any weight loss was ate up by avionics at a later date.

Robert "Bub" Wright, aka Skylane, passed away in November of 2011. He was a beloved community member and will be missed.

Ive read some bad things about sky tec on other sites. Apparently they dont disengage quickly enough? And some warranty problems. B&C seems the way to go.

They don't disengage properly because you have the wrong starter adapter. Install the proper one and the problem goes away.

Thanks guys for your input. I'll proably just do a exchange on my stock starter. $500+ is alittle to much to save 8 lbs. I'll just go on a diet, I need to anyway. :)
