Loading a plane into a plane

My crew was tasked to move a C130 Fuselage to another base this weekend. It had been being used a cargo load trainer for the folks that handle pallets. Not everyday we get a load like this.

Nice trick! Roll through those backwards and it looks a little like a whale giving birth.

Way cool, never forget putting 13 little birds in one for a deployment to gitmo, or the bat turn to keep from flying over the fence down there on base or final. Thanks for sharing pics.

We were excited to heli in Silverton — until we saw the bird. Looking like something your stoner uncle built in the garage out of four Meccano sets, a fish tank, and an AMC Pacer, this helicopter seats a pilot plus two only, making it a tricky vehicle, logistics-wise, when your group has 8 people in it. Amen...man I get sick of hearing about the C-17. They had to hipe it all up to sell it to the public. It can only take off with half of what we can and it can only carry it about 1/3rd the distance without multiple air refuelings. The C-5 can operate out of same exact fields as they can. It's really not all that spectacular of an airplane especially when you consider the budget and technology they had to build it. The C-5 was designed and built in the 60's with paper and slide rules. It can do some cool stuff like yanking and banking and landing in 3000ft but when it comes right down to our mission which is Long Range Strategic Airlift there is no comparing the two in terms of capability. Yes we are rivals...hehe :D Piper painter I expect a comeback

Back when I was on FRED at Dover, we flew a B-52 to Wright Patt. Now I'll have to go dig in my hard copy photos to find it and scan them in.

Re: Loading a plane into a plane

Reminds me of a story I heard years ago about a F4 pilot taxing up to a runway intersection. Across the way a C5 is taxing towards him. He radios "C5 what are your intentions?". The F4 driver then watches as the C5 stops and the forward section slowly opens. A voice comes back "We are going to eat you!"

Re: Loading a plane into a plane

I love the C-5. Right out of college I was working on fungus caused corrosion problems on the C-130 and moved over to Mfg. research for C-5 ship #1 ( and follow on's). Lyndon Johnson looked at it when it rolled out and said " That thing sure could haul a lot of hay."

This bird had so many "firsts" that it is hard to recall them all. The freakiest thing was to watch this behemoth on short final with its nose pointed at an angle to the runway, and land with the mains pointed down the runway.

Oh, while I am waxing nostalgic, the Herky Bird that first flew in 1954 is STILL in production. I cannot think of another commercial or military aircraft with that longevity.

Very cool AvidFlyer, too bad you didn't have your Avid in the back of the C-130!

Your day job is pretty cool, what a great plane to do what it does even though it's the size of a large (very) home, mind boggling!

Re: Loading a plane into a plane

The C-5 is a great airplane and getting better. They are in the process of re-engining it right now and we just finshed up a complete revamp of the Avionics bringing us up to speed with modern jets. They are in the final phases of testing and should go into production soon. The prototype broke 41 world records in a single flight last September.

Looks like you were at Little Rock AFB. I'm a C-130 loadmaster and I've spent some time on that trainer back in tech school.

Nothing like the 130 in a 17, parts of a 206 in a 206

Re: Loading a plane into a plane

Man, no love for the C-17. Well, allow me to retort(in a strictly good natured manner).
Number of times I've seen a C-5 land on a 3,500' strip: 0
Number of times I've seen a C-5 on an unimproved strip in OEF: 0
Number of times I've seen a C-5 in OEF period: 3
Number of times I've been taked to fly parts to a broke C-5: 5
Number of times I've seen a hard-broke C-5: 10
Number of times I've seen a hard-broke C-5 somewhere other than a high per diem location: 0
Number of times I've seen a hard-broke C-5 sit on the same spot on a ramp for 2 weeks: 1
Number of times I've had sever bronchitis bordering pneumonia because I had to take parts to a hard-broke C-5 in Eilsen AFB, AK and had to refuel my C-17 because I was the lowest time pilot on the jet: 1
You C-5 guys, in your old plane, holding onto your long past glory days, breaking in Spain and Diego all the time...
I would make jokes about the C-5 taking it from the rear from these photos, but you guys can take it from the front, as well. Swingin' both ways...
But in all seriousness, talk about an impressive plane, still getting the job done(at least 54% of the time) with a 40 year old airframe. That old crate can really haul the mail, not like our puny 170,900 lb. payload in Chuck.
Let the 17 bashing continue!!!(don't hate becasue we have working air conditioning)...

Nice comeback!! Didn't know we had any Barney drivers on here. I'm not saying the C-17 isn't impressive in it's own way it's just the politics of the whole thing that tick me off....the whole justifying it to the public...making it the poster child for everything. I grew up on the KC-135...it'll always hold a special place in my heart. It's been 5 years since I came to the T tail world and I still find myself talking about how we did in the Tanker world a lot :D

Re: Loading a plane into a plane

This may take us straight to Hot Air but.....

I grew up on the KC-135

Is anyone else as pissed as I am that we are even considering a European tanker?

Hell we don't make much in this country anymore, but we do make damn fine airplanes with American labor who are paying American taxes, buying their groceries at American stores, buying houses from American carpenters, ........

Yeah I know I live in Boeing country and used to work for Lockheed, so my view may be slanted.
