Long lost/uncharted/unknown Oregon airstrips...

I can't get enough of this history stuff... With BladeRunner's recent threads regarding some possible strips in Oregon, and some history buzz going around with the concrete arrows and vintage photos. It got me thinking how much I love reading about history and that I've also found multiple locations on GoogleEarth where it appears once upon a time there was or even still appears to be an airstrip, and with no pertinent information available, i.e. not on a sectional, not on airnav or google, where do I find out more? As Gump would say go check it out in person, sure, but as has been shown time and time before, there is a wealth of information on this site, so here is my history thread contribution. With the idea that instead of each find having its own thread, maybe they can all wind up in this thread.

So what have you found on GoogleEarth or in person? Also have you found a strip that is obviously still in use, and say you want to get permission to land but you can not find any ownership info? Or are just flat out curious. This should be the place to ask! And lastly there are also quite a few long lost strips in Oregon that there is some decent public knowledge about, or have been mentioned in the past on this site, add those to the mix too!

Just wondering...Thanks. Image

Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

Here is a cool strip in the coast range I have flown over many times, its on a hill top just north of the town of Summit. its 1000' long and one way up hill to the east, an they appear to be doing some ag work out of it. Either way I've always wanted to land but don't know who to ask!

Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

This is shown as an airstrip in an Oregon fishing guide that I have, and that was probably adapted from USFS/USGS maps, so I believe this is a possible long lost USFS strip on the Rogue River. Would be an awesome site to recreate it sits across the river from the Foster Bar take out.

Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

As mentioned in a few previous threads, the Big Rock Flat strip...

tcj wrote:Here's another for you Oregonians to contemplate. Paste these coordinates into Google maps. 45.040047, -119.571345 It is actually called "Big" Rock Flat. It has never been on the sectionals that I know of. In the 70's the Forest Service had a 20 person fire crew that lived in tents across the road. They would fly in and out going to and coming home from fires in a DC3.

The local ranchers and hunters used it all the time I worked there from 1980 to 95. No body had been taking care of it when I moved there in 1980 so I put up a wind sock and shoveled and raked the ruts kind of smooth. I asked a local rancher with a cub how smooth it needed to be and he said to drive down it in an open jeep at 40 mph and if I could stay in the jeep that was smooth enough.

The east west runway had lots of bunch grass and was very rough when I moved away in 95 but people were still using the north south runway.

Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

I'm pretty sure this one has been discussed on this site before. Anyways this is Rager Airstrip, which I believe to be a FS strip?

Mitchell Airstrip, I think this was an old BLM/FS strip?

Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

Now this image doesn't show much, this really is B.F.E. Oregon, GoogleEarth shows this to be "Hawks Valley Airstrip", that's all I know. I drove past this in April of 2013 and didn't see much. It is BLM land and I don't think it is in a wilderness study area, so the road should be fair game.

Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

This is one I have always been curious about. Its listed on the sectional as "unverified", its at the junction of Highway 78 and Highway 95. Just wonder if it could be/was a FS/BLM/ODOT/CIA/FBI strip?

Re: Long lost/uncharted Oregon airstrips!

I'm in the same boat as you, see all these strips but unsure of their status. I've started browsing land status maps online. Most states and/or counties have them. There are BLM maps available too which show land status in the legend but can be hard to decipher at times.
Some counties have GIS sites which is like a google earth type thing, they will often show the land owners information along with the parcel data.
I've been looking at those quite a bit. You could always just be bold and call up the land owners and ask them.
