Looking at a Stinson ?????

Interested in Stinson with a 150 Franklin about 600 smoh. thought it might be a good plane for my son and I to own together. Actually thought it might be a good graduation present (1/2 ownership) from college. His 6'5" 240 I'm 6'3" 275 are we going to have issues flying together? Where's a good place to start with the STC's ie Auto fuel, bigger tires etc etc. This one close to home but haven't gone and flown it yet what should I be looking for? Don't know much about the beast.
Thanks in advance for the advice.

Looking at a Stinson ?????

515lbs worth of pilot meat... You're going to need a little more juice on that airframe. I'd hold out for the O-470 or Franklin 220 if you can find one.

I'm 200 lbs and my dad is about the same. With my 145hp Cessna we were always thinking very hard about every mountain takeoff.

Re: Looking at a Stinson ?????

Find a Stinson nearby and go fly it for a bit. I'm guessing at your size you're not going to be all that comfortable. If you're long legged it's a bigger problem as the yoke will hit your knees on basic maneuvers. If you have a long torso then the seat and head liner can be modified to make a little more room, but 2 big guys in the front seat is going to feel very tight. (The room is about the same to the avg airline coach seat, minus the arm rest, and doors on each side.)

If you do decide on getting a Stinson, I wouldn't get the 150hp. It may do okay at sea level, but any density altitude and load will kill your performance. Also, the cranks for the Franklin 150 are very hard to come by. The parts for the 165 are not much of a problem to find.

Stinson's are great planes for many missions. If you decided on going with one, take your time and find a good one.

Re: Looking at a Stinson ?????

I'm told that the 150 horse is not just a lower powered version of the 165. An I/A in Alaska spent about an hour convincing me that there just isn't much good to be said of the smaller motor unless it's to ferry the airplane to a location to install something bigger. My personal choice would be the Bobcat conversion that used to be owned by Tom Buce. I'm not sure who has it now but Tom can provide the details. http://www.landsinn.net/contact-tom.html He quoted me $35K if I provided an airworthy 108------dash 2 or 3 preferred. That would be with a decent 0-360 which he seemed to have a line on.

Having said all that, there are several Mid Westerners on the Stinson Forum that have run those 150s for years at those altitudes and love them. I dunno. My personal choice is for the most horsepower I can get always. No free lunch.

I also have the stc package for installing a 220 HP or 250 turbo Franklin on Stinson 108 from Seaplanes in Oregon approved in 1994 . We had a 0-470 powered 108-2 that is towing banners in Midwest now.

I was in partnership with some guys with the Seaplanes 220 Franklin conversion on a 172. Did you buy the 172 STC also?

Re: Looking at a Stinson ?????

Bighorn,
You still looking? Darn, I had figured you had found something by now. ;) Had a guy that is your size 'try my RANS S7 on for size' last weekend at the Fall Colors Tour. He has a modified PA-12 and the first thing he said when he got in..."dang, this thing is comfy, like being in an Easy-Boy recliner". He was impressed with the room, especially the head room since he is quite tall and I guess used to stooping over in most planes. I think he wants to sell his PA-12 and go Experimental.

I was down closer to your area yesterday with the RANS. I flew down for the Grand Opening of the Fagen Fighter Museum.

There's a Stearman up in my neck of the woods for sale. LOL

Lately I've seen Super Stinsons sell for close to that already converted. Didn't someone here buy one from the SW Washington/Portland area (maybe based at Fantasy Field?) not too long ago with a 470 & Bushwheels?

Yep still looking....I like to study and ask questions .....took me over a year before I fond the right 206.....

A buddy and I sat in a Stinson yesterday, he is the same size as I and we were tight, reminds me of a 150 in size, leg room was a bit short as well.....thanks MM for advice.

I sat in a PA-12 Super Cruiser about a week ago, I just missed out on the sale. It would have needed alot of work, that had ample room.

You should have come south another 30 minutes and landed at the farm, how was the Grand Openning @ Fagens, any pics?

Re: Looking at a Stinson ?????

I found a very nice 108-1 with a low time 165 for about $18K. I went for the Luscombe instead. I don't remember the guy who had it but Matt and Tadpole probably remember. He was an Ida-ho if I remember correct.
