Looking for a float plane

Looking for a float plane. 2 place with amphibs or folding wings. I had a 172 on straight floats. Will keep on beach at home and trailer up to runway in fall and back in spring. Narrow roadway. Glastar would work. Or just a Murphy Rebel on amphibs. Can any Glastar go on floats is the question. Or does it need to be built with a float kit from the start.

A few Glastars for sale but on wheels only. Also what are the best make of floats straight or amphibs? Aerocet, Clamar or what.

Re: Looking for a float plane

I've seen Glastars on floats, so it can be done. I don't know what it takes to float one, though, or if the provisions are built in to all the kits.

As to floats, I'd look for a set of Montana amphibious floats. I don't know if the company is still in business, but their floats are some of the best. They used to sell both kits and completed floats. I've flown one plane on those floats, and I was very impressed with the performance.

One note on trailering. Some years ago, we invited these folks to bring one of their planes to an aviation function. They landed at the airport, and their plan was to fold wings and tow it or trailer to the event. Turned out that the tail width was too big to be road legal without wide load procedures......They just waited till midnight and went for it. But, depending on how far you need to tow it, and what kind of street, you may want to do some measuring first.

I know of a couple guys at my airport with the Glastars on floats, I don't know any specifics on which floats though. Heck of an airplane though, the one has an 0-540.
Why trailer it? Couldn't you fly it over before ice up and after ice off?

Re: Looking for a float plane

I would only want it in the water for four months. After that the water is too cold. Just have to get it a few thousand feet from my beach to the airstrip in the back yard. If I went for a longer season I could fly it in on the snow. Also on amphibs it could be in the hangar most of the time. Trees to narrow along the lane way to not fold wings or remove tail.
