I found this for sale locally, just wondering if you folks think its worth the cash, is the VW going to keep running?

They seem to run okay but with a 38hp boat anchor on the nose it'll probably have about as much pep as a riding lawn mower. Direct drive low horsepower engines do not do very well on these draggy airplanes. With a Rotax 503 those little single seat sky raiders perform really well. No way I would pay that kind of money with that engine basically zero avionics.

I agree. Maybe at sea level if you are 150lbs or less it might be OK. 37 horse is marginal at best at any kind of elevation. For the same weight you can put an HKS on there and have a fun little single seater but it would likely be over the limit for a legal part 103 ultralight.

Ditto. There have been some pretty nice ones over the last few years with decent engines but way more money than the one you are looking at. Don't forget about the Rans S4 and S5 Coyotes. I think there are a couple of them on Barnstormers now. The wings don't fold and I wouldn't tie one out so a hangar is pretty much a must.

A friend of mine has one for sale here at KOTH, North Bend Oregon, that has a 503 in it and it is priced pretty reasonable. PM me if you want more info.

I'm on the other side of the country in upstate NY. We are at 600ft elevation, so its not a real issue. I owned a Tierra Tbird with a 377 rotax, seemed to have excellent performance compared to what I'm used to flying off airport, a PA-15 Vagabond.

A friend of mine purchased the airplane, he is a former skyraider owner. Looking forward to tinkering with it.
