Luscombe strength

Looks like the Luscombe is a strong design.
I was surfing the Interweb and ran across this pic. :D

Re: Luscombe strength

Very strong little airplane with few ADs in all these years. The beef up of the bulkhead, where the front of the horizontal stabilizer attaches, is important. Lots of cracks in that area on those not yet or poorly fixed.

Put today's women on it and you won't have that picture, in fact I'm embarrassed to see the results...

Now we know why the Skalywagon needed a major overhaul already. You gotta quit taking them big ladies for rides Luke! It's too hard on the engine! Haha

Re: Luscombe strength

Lest any of our avid Cessna 100 series afficionados and enthusiasts forget... the Luscombe is what Cessna copied, and that copy (the 120) became the whole revolution in semi-monocoque light aircraft... that is so often incorrectly attributed to Cessna.

It looks like there were 30 ladies up there. Estimating 120 lbs each, that's a 3600 lb negative wing load. That's -2.6 gs at gross weight. The utility category limit is -1.76 gs. -2.6 gs is a really high load for this type of plane. Maybe they found a bunch of 90 pounders for the photo shoot. Those ladies probably weren't picked out of the funnel cake line at the county fair.

Don't know what year that photo was taken, but note that the ladies all have their dresses primly wrapped around their knees. Just imagine the view if that photoshoot was done today with a bunch of Kardashian types!

I have to say the Cessna version of this promo photo was a lot less attractive:
