Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

If I were building a Lyc for an experimental, and premature cam failure was a concern, I'd be inclined to lean towards Ney nozzles, if for no other reason than, the fact that I'd still be able to run any cam I'd like to. I've never been fond of getting stuck into buying a particular product because it's the only one that will play well with a certain mod…
Take care, Rob

I really don't know if it's necessary for the smaller lyc's. But firewall forward had been pushing this for the 541's they were doing. 541's are notorious for chewing up the cams, you would consider yourself lucky if you had one that actually made it to tbo without chewing up the followers and lobes. I've seen it happen on a baron 56tc and a duke not too long ago, Had to replace both engines.

keep them flying!
I've heard of "roller rockers", I'm curious why no one has developed roller followers? Seems like that would be a good fix for lobe / follower wear, which seems to be Lycoming's Achilles heel. Just like valve guides are Continentals'.

I agree with Rob. I'd go with the Nay Nozzles so your not limited to one source for a camshaft.

I've wondered the same. They make roller lifters for old V8s so it is obviously doable. But I've also read that roller lifters don't provide much can benefit unless the engine is ran at high rpm. I was told by a couple marine engine builders that I didn't need to spend the money on a roller conversion for the 351w in my boat because it only sees 4500 rpm max. I don't really know though, it seems like a good idea.

Ain't them mushroom shaped lifters supposed to rotate freely?
Be a whole lot of fun if a roller lifter rotated so the roller axis was perpendicular to the cam axis...

Looks like a good start. I would add the roller cams also provided they are holding up to TBO.
Yes to someone above - the smaller Lycs. do not like to sit around with cam exposed on top where moisture condenses. On flight line planes the smaller Lycs. can easily go beyond TBO when flown every day.
Would still like to see more specific drawings of how and where the oil is fed.
Reason - Without knowing any more than the shown (concept) photos - what happens to the oil pressure?
Seems to me - just of the top of an old head - that the more holes the less pressure.
But then I just woke up after a weekend of my daughters first wedding.
Wannabe knowing more

It is better to be late in this world, than early in the next.
My 0-360 in my 170 has the center lube cam. It has about 500 hrs on it. That's about all the experience I have with it. Don't think I would do it again at rebuild. I think now there are better options listed in previous post.
