M45

Anyone been to or have Knowledge of M45 -- Alpine county south of Lake Tahoe ? Is there camping OK any other airstrips in this area .Looking for a coool spot not too far from Las Vegas ---Either Nevada ,Utah or Calif. or Arizona .Prefer within 300-400 (or less ) from Las Vegas area. I wanted to go to Johnson Creek but just can't justify it unless I go for a week or so. This should be a 2-4 day/night mini vacation . Thanks http://www.airnav.com/airport/M45

Re: M45

Hi Bill:

M45 does have an unimproved campground and I have been there several times. I have never seen anyone there. There is also a lake (Indian Creek Reservoir) not too far from the airport. The Carson River is pretty good trout fishing, if you are up for a hike (about 1 mile). Getting to the river is easy, getting back to the airport is another thing best done slowly and NOT during the heat of the day.

Be sure to take water with you for camping and the hike to the river.

Markleeville is about 5 miles from the airport and a bit of a hike. Sometimes you can catch a ride from someone heading from the lake to town. The town doesn't offer much, but there is a place for adult beverages. Call me if you have any questions.

You're never too old to learn something stupid.

Re: M45

I'd pm Aktahoe and see if he'll share info on something better in the area - with all the exploring he's done in the area I'm sure he knows of some better options

All kinds of places...AlpineCo is OK..good fishing if you get it right. As mentioned, it can be a strenuous hike back up to your plane. Nothing there at all, but the Carson RIver is pretty cool in that part. You also have a million smooth dirt roads to land and camp for a night or two at Lahonton Lake. Famous for the Lahonton Cutthroat trout. Its a desert out there however. Pretty cool to land close to the old Fort Sumner and spend 15 minutes looking around.

Going north to Lake Almanor (30 min from KTRK) is a good time. Courtesy bikes, town is very close with lots of options and good fishing in the lake. You could then head over the Lake Spaulding. Good fishing again, not that great of camping, but very close to Almanor.

You could camp at the Truckee glider port with Martis lake and good fishing, with courtesy bikes and town on the bike path is 2 miles.

You could camp at anyone of our ranches we have been landing as a base then fly where ever you wish.

I really like Trinity. It has a great strip on the water. Good camping, fishing etc., but now your getting a bit north.

Bridgeport is ok for a stop. Town is close for something to eat. Not much else there but again it is a stop.

Heck, just flying to South Lake Tahoe is great as you have town, night life, casinos, the lake, hiking you name it. Pretty much whatever your looking for.

Back to Alpine CO. There is just not much there. You would still need to get fuel in Minden, South Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Carson, Reno, etc.

Landing at Mono lake is also pretty cool for a good day of hiking, etc. Again not much there but a beautiful spot at sunrise.

Just ideas...

Good luck

Looking south and setting up to land "17"

If your looking for lake fishing, river fishing, hiking or river rafting try Kern River Valley L05. :D The airport campground is 100 yards from the river and they also have rental cars. Town is 3-miles north of the airport.
