M5 performance 220 Franklin

I am looking at buying an M 5 with the 220 Franklin. Does anyone have a link to the Performance data? Or do you own one. I am curious about useful load, ceiling, and climb rate. I was at the Maule site and they have nothing there. Any help will be appreciated. Regards…Rob

Hmm, TAP says:

Rec'md TBO: 1500 hrs

I've occasionally found errors in their database, so look upon this with a critical eye.

There are a couple M5 owners around here, they can tell you all sorts of pros/cons about the aircraft. jmtgt has an IO-360 powered M5, UP_M5 has an M5, N6EA and Strata Rocketeer have Franklin 220 powered M4's.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Must be interesting to own a plane that requires more runway to land than it does to take off, instead of the other way around like me.

Some of those performance claims listed above are off the mark.

My IA has an M-5-220C (it's also for sale and very clean). We both cruise about 120kts at 65% power burning 9-10gph with size 8.50 shoes. Ain't no way the plane weighs 1300 lbs, unless the interior has been gutted. A more realistic number is around 1400-1425 depending on what's in the panel. Short field performance is a little better than the M-4 because of the longer flaps. The listed take off and landing performance is close to accurate - at sea level. The short numbers are with a pilot and half tanks. Dirty stall light is about 42mph. Range numbers for 40ga. (usable) is about right. Climb rate is about right, but I frequently see about 1500fpm near sea level with my M-4 - full main tanks, minimal baggage, and 325Lbs of pilot and passenger. The Franklin engine has very good high density altitude performance with excellent power retention at altitude.

A lot of these M-5's have had the 2500lb up gross kit put on em', ask about it.

Probable upgrade M7...

Thank you all very much! By next spring/summer I should be ready to come to 1 or 2 of the back country fly ins. Some good news for me, my banker tells me I can now spend up to 90 to 100K. So I am now thinking M7 235 with better avionics. If you know of any let me know. 1 or 2 owner is better. Prefer to stay away from ones used by commercial operations. I get trade a plane and have a subscription to the web site so I know whats there. If ya all have personal knowledge of any, pass it this way. Best regards...Rob

my M5 has the 235 hp lycoming so i can't comment on the engine- although i have flown behind a few 220 franks and i have always been impressed by their power.
my M5 has the up gross weight kit (which most do by now) to 2500lbs which gives me a usefull of 1020lbs. and that is with a panel that is crammed full of goodies. i also have the aux tanks that brings the fuel load to 66 gallons.
