Hi Guys and Girls,

When I got my C185A it came with Madras Super-tips installed from when it was a jumpship, as well as a Horton STOL.

I am finding it hard to get any decent info on what the tips do? I understand the theory but having never flown the plane without them I have nothing to compare it too. This isn't helped by the fact that of the other two 185s I have flown one has a sportsman STOL, the other straight factory symmetrical wing. Of the three mine is the nicest to fly and easiest to land, it has great feel right down to very slow and I find it easy to hit my touch down point every time.

Does anyone know? All I can find are very conflicting view (like most things on the internet!!) either people love them or hate them. All I know is Madras wouldn't have wasted their time on an STC for something that didn't do anything!

I have a set on my C172, and I can't give you any hard numbers but they definitly make full flap landings easier to control. I can keep the wheels off the runway untill the airspeed indicator drops off to below 40 ias, and the ailerons do NOT get mushy and start to wobble around like a srandard 172.If you decide you don't like them, I've seen them selling used for about $2,500.

I have them on my 170B, with an otherwise stock wing. I like the handling of my plane, same as you describe yours. One time I did a series of power-off stalls to all four compass directions, comparing GPS ground speed in each direction during the break. I determined the break came at 42 MPH TAS. I can't remember the POH stall speed at the moment, but I think my results were better by a few MPH. The popular consensus I've heard is that if you don't have them, it's not worth adding them, and if you do have them, it's not worth taking them off! I admit I do like the look of them, though. Oh, and some people have complained that they block your side vision.

Wow $2500! I got a brand new pair still in the box off ebay for $120!

I like them, in combo with the horten the plane as great feel and control, plus it will climb at greater than 2000'/min.

They don't block that much of the view.. and they look awesome

I've had about dozen pairs -even tried to buy the Company when Ace Deamers flew west. His Boys wouldn't accept my offer so we didn't do the deal .I call them the cheapest STOL kit you can get -and they work really well. One comment is in strong crosswind the side with the wind -it tends to be to an little squarely.
