Magneto sevice
Have problems with your aircraft? Maybe just questions about how best to tune or adjust something? Regs or maintenance? Need to know the best way to do something?
My 182B has 560 hrs on a Continental Gold Medallion rebuild. We think that the mags came off the previous engine. Several engine log entries show replacing couplers and checking timing etc.
I am confident that they have been maintained properly but not sure if they have ever been overhauled and if they have, there is no record of it.
I feel that they should be pulled and sent to a mag shop but I would like them to go to a place that does not feel it necessary to change everything but the attaching bolts. If it is worn out then it needs to be changed.
My ex partner took the plane in for annual with 1490 hrs on the engine that had new Slics installed at overhaul. The mags were sent in and the parts and labor would have been so high that he just bought new mags. Oh, by the way my mags are Bendix.

Tim,
The usual response from most will be. Bendix are more expensive but infinitely rebuildable. Slicks are less expensive but you can't rebuild 'em.
Depending on what your bendix mags need, it maybe cheaper to fix/rebuild them. If you take apart a bendix, they are pretty simple and straight forward. I like the idea of being able to replace a simple part and get them back in service.
People usually switch to slicks when their bendix's are trashed due to the lower initial cost.
Just my .02 on a Ford / Chevy type issue.

Mark,
Slick mags can be overhauled, They have a 500 hr service which I had done to mine at last annual. New coils points gears and impulse couplings.
$300.00 or close to it I would have to look it up

The 4300 series Slick mags are easily rebuildable. Problem is if you have to pay shop rate plus parts some times its cheaper to exchange. Same thing with carbs.

I have slicks on my 1959 182 and my mechanic has done two 500 hour inspections and I had a bad mag and he replaced the coil in it. He didn't give me the indication that they couldn't be overhauled. Bob

I have used Andy at Skypower in Auburn, CA. He knows both Slicks and Bendix well. You should be able to send them into him and he will look at them and tell you what they need. Also they should be able to I.R.A.N.(inspect and repair as neccassary) at the customers request.
I would personally stick with Bendix, I feel they are built a bit better inside and I have pulled and replaced more Slicks than Bendix.
Now if I could get a # for Skypower. They might be in the flightguide.

I think Savage mags are the best in the business, rebuilt the bendix mags better than new. Only problem is they are no longer an approved FAA repair station. I think one of the guys at skypower used to work at savage. That is where my IA recommends.
BTW, having put 1500 bucks into my bendix mags, I think I would just buy the slicks next time.
When you put them side by side, the bendix are built like a tank compared to the slicks. Statistics show that the Slicks are just as reliable.
Tim, one gotcha if you keep the bendix mags. Make sure the washers used for the attaching bolts are the correct part number. They are very thick and sturdy. We found some generic AN washers holding the mags on, and when we took the mags off you could see that the washers had bent.

I agree with Buzz, Savage is about the best in the business, I know Al personally and he is a good guy with a lot of knowledge. He has done a lot of work in the past for me on Radial and Antique Mags. If anyone is ever down in Hayward, CA drop by his shop it is kind of like a museum with lots of pictures of airplanes he built mags for and old vintage aviation memorabilia.
