makeing it through the Rockies

If flying from New England to Nor California, what is the best route for flying over the Rockies this time of year? VFR or course.

I go several times a year to WI. I always go EKO, Y13, GCC, MFI

Winter or summer that corridor has always treated me best.

I have flown over the Rockies 8 times, and I always use the route that goes to Rock Springs, Fort Collins and I have had good luck going that way. I start in S49 Vale Oregon. That is my home base. I go out over the corners of Utah, Wy. and ID. The Bear lake area.

When I learned to fly in W. Colorado, we always went early in the am. regardless of the route when we had to cross the rock pile. Makes for a much more pleasant experience.

Tim, If you wan t to avoid the high rocks, head for Scottsbluff/Cheyene....Caspar....south pass( just S of Lander, WY....Montpelier, ID..towards Pocatello then down to Elko and home.. Never have to get above 8000msl..keeps you out of SLC traffic and lake effect weather

I agree, I always go over at bear lake to Kemmer and on.

It is an easy hit from Twin or Burly.

I have flown this area alot, always been ok even in the summer, just go early in the day, you know, go ugly early.

Pick up I-80 at Chicago. A good runway underneath, all the way home, makes Jack a dull boy, but there are plenty of towns and airports along the way if you have to pause a spell.

Yep, I thought I had the partnership thing setteled with me keeping it. Then he changed his mind and wanted to value the plane at about 12 to 14K more than I thought it was worth. I took the money and ran.

Bought a plane in Road Island and will be flying it home in about 2.5 weeks pending weather.

Paint is prety bad but the engine and prop are low time. Avionics is pretty good. The guy came down considerbly.

Best thing about buying a plane 2255 NM away is that you have to fly it home. Also the Hudson River 800 agl transit is inviting.

Tannis Heater

This plane has a Tannis heater, cylinders and sump. Anybody know how long it takes to get it to propper start temp from 30 degrees. I always pre heat when below 40 deg.

Oh and the seller already paid for hanger rent for the month of March. Thought that was nice. He is 80 years old and had a real hard time getting his physical last time so therefore the sale. He has been a partner or full owner since 1970.

Looks good, the engine and prop times are good and the instruments and gauges all look good. The AP is a plus. Go easy with the Fuel gauges. Go about three hours and refuel. Don't believe them until you know. Just a suggestion. Bob

A good place to stop for fuel is Red Oak, IA. KRDK They usually have the cheapest fuel around. They have it listed as $3.85 right now. Bob ( no I am not related, but I stop there every time I fly east.)

Hey Tim
I would think a couple hours would work. I have the same set up on mine. It heats up pretty quick. If I heat it for 4-5 hours, it's pretty close to 90 degrees. Maybe plug cowl inlets, throw something over the top of the cowl. Spin the prop a few times before you crank it.
Congrats Gary

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

My SPOT page

When bringing the plane back from Road Island in about 2 1/2 weeks, It will still be nippy in the morning. Not sure if it will be handy to plug in the landis.

I like leaving early in the morning so a fuel operated pree heater would be the best. Anybody come up with a way to use Jet Boil to pree heat with.

Would airlines frown on me packing a jet boil into my check ins

Hey Tim

In the winter, I carry a 100' extension cord. FBO's have always had somewhere I could plug in from a tie down. Usually throw a sleeping bag over the cowl if it is very cold.

If it is in the hangar, it should have electricity available. So plug in the heater for 30 minutes or so. Thats what I do for my 182. I have an engine cover and a pan heater to warm up the Oil. I place a small heater in the cabin to warm up the instruments.

It is in a hanger now and will be when i pick it up. The old owner will plug it in the night I arive and it will be tosty when I leave in the morning. He will also leave a 50 foot cord

It is the overnight stays on the way home that I nead to worry about. I will pack an extra 100' of cord when I come. I am a fenatic about not starting the engine when less than 40 deg.

Tim...

Order yourself up a good engine blanket too, and get it delivered back east so you'll have it for the trip. Makes pre-heat easy and it's your survival sleeping bag/shelter for the ride.

There's a guy on eBay who sells some nice ones, as well as the other usual suspects.
