Marvel mystery oil definitive guide?

Is there one?

Especially for smaller auto fuel STC type engine like a A65?

Thanks

Re: Marvel mystery oil definitive guide?

Ooooohhhh snake oil.... it will fix what you got and leave your breath smelling so fresh!

Personally I like to take a shot of it before a big night out. I find that it lubricates the mind and body pretty effectively.

I also mix as per the directions on the container with 100LL to try and keep the 'ol valves doing valve things in the front of my airplane. Or if the FAA is listening. My lawnmower. I don't carry it with me and only add it when fueling up in front of my hangar. Pretty confident there is no science behind it.

Now cam guard on the other hand....

Thanks

That is more or less what I heard

It maybe helps, but never read anything of it hurting

But, man, some folks in the vintage airplane world swear by it, and it’s cheap so?

Was not sure if anyone did a real deep dive into MMO like some folks did on the anti rust oils a while back

Re: Marvel mystery oil definitive guide?

I've never heard of it hurting when added to fuel. Lots of folks swear it reduces valve sticking and plug fouling in their O-300's. Even more say it's pointless. I'm not religious about adding it but it's cheap and smells good.

Judging by plug condition/rpm drop at each oil change mark I think that it does do something...

That’s amazing that for how long this stuff has been around, for all the reputation and strange controversy, now in the day of YouTube and “like and subscribe” no one ever did a quasi logical test on this stuff

Even if it was just on a couple harbor freight 4 stroke weed eaters

Run one with it and one without, leave them running for a good long while, maybe let them sit over a winter and repeat and take them apart, something like that

Re: Marvel mystery oil definitive guide?

About 25 years ago, maybe longer, the FAA and Shell Oil cooperated on a test of every oil and fuel additive on the market. Everything from STP to Marvel Mystery Oil. Final results were that none of them had any verifiable benefits, but there was some evidence that marvel mystery oil may have some benefit in stopping Lycoming exhaust valves from sticking. Not proven, but a definite maybe. Everything else they tested was proven to be basically worthless, some stuff may stop blue smoke from the exhaust for a few minutes, but it was all temporary.

Re: Marvel mystery oil definitive guide?

I've been burning mogas in my planes forever.
Used to add MMO in the suggested amount to every can.
This was starting back around 1997, when it was $3 a quart at Walmart.
After several years at $3, the price started creeping up, and eventually I just quit using it.
I didn't notice any difference in how the plane ran, plug condition, valves sticking, etc.
