Maule ceconite fabric

Hello,
I have a (93) maule mx7 with original
Ceconite fabric I’m currently repainting the plane and have the fabric stripped down it seems to be in good serviceable condition but wanted opinions on if I should change it out or not. The plane is in Alaska and not hangared. See attached photos.

Thank you in advance.

Re: Maule ceconite fabric

Recover it. Anywhere there was a crack in the finish, there's a weaker (not necessarily "weak" at this time, but weaker than the rest of the fabric) spot. Why waste the effort and money to put good product on top of old? I've been at this for 40+ years and never had a customer that wasn't happy they'd gone ahead and done it right, if they were going to keep the plane.

^that

For the most part if you’re going to repaint best to re-cover

Repainted fabric planes to me demand a lower value than a no re paint with old paint

If you’re going to do it, do it :)

Re: Maule ceconite fabric

I have a 2000 M7. I have recovered the elevator and horizontal. If I ever need to repaint the fuselage I will recover!!. I have quite a bit of ring worm cracks.

When I did the horizontal the reenforcing tapes were lifting on the edges. I thought it was a safety issue. No freaking way. The fabric wouldn't have come off at 300MPH. My gosh that stuff is strong!

What John said. All those brown lines where the paint was cracked will be quite a bit weaker. I'd wager you can poke your finger through if you tried. Recover it. Good time to get a good look at the tubing as well.

Definitely recover. You will thank yourself in the years to come for taking the time now. I had the same dilemma on a Super Cub I owned years ago. I'd done a number of patches and some repainting but nothing was ever up to snuff.

Took the time with a good friend and we stripped it to the bone, inspected and repaired a few minor issues on the tubing and recovered.

I learned a ton about the airframe and was very happy I took the time to do the job right.

Repainting fabric is kind of like lipstick on a pig. It might be pretty but it's till a pig.

I'm sure you find what works best for your situation.
