Maule-Mods site changes

I just noticed that Maule-Mods has gone to a fee for use system. Does anybody know what improvements will come along with the cashflow? I hope it works out for them.

I received a PM from Steve J. this morning saying that a new web developer and host was now managing Johan's site and that a new forum was forthcoming. Also heard from another source that Johan was going to start charging to register for the Maule forum.

The site that the domain name is pointing to right now is not Johan's (???) - R&R Pilots Flying Club (????). Me gets the feeling there's a mix up with the domain transfer and R&R is on Steve's server.

I'm sure they'll get it all sorted out in due course, but I'm not sure I'm gonna pay to register to post. I'm getting eatin' up by registrations and fees for this and that and everything else as it is.

Doug-

I'll let you continue to use this website for a cheeseburger.

How much are they going to charge to register? Johan told me this was something he wanted to do, and I was going to help him but I just got too busy. I don't know if you'll be able to do much better than them for a technical Maule forum. You're free to start a Maule type forum on this website if you like though.

I'll make it two cheeseburgers, hell, I'll make it three if you can stuff em in! Actually, I think I owe you a drink or two also.

An undisclosed source said he thought the registration fee would be $35 per year for the new Maule forum - I suppose I can scrape that up, but it'll hurt a bit.

Like you, I'm so busy these days I don't think I could find the time to ride herd on a web forum, but the thought did cross my mind.

I see they took the hyphen out of the old Maule Mods domain name, which explains the misdirection.

I always wished there were more activity over at maulemods. I can not imagine charging is going to help the community grow or encourage the free flow of knowledge that makes forums invaluable. Of course none of this is possible if there are not dedicated people organizers and administrators behind the scenes, and I understand that Johan is running a commercial site. Nonetheless charging seems like a dangerous turn of events. I wonder where all of the archival information will end up. I wonder where Maule pilots will gather.

By the way Zane, what you have done here is impressive. It seems you have ambitions to keep improving the site: databases and linked maps. Thank You,
Chet

I contribute on www.flymaule.org and www.maulepilots.org.
Maulemods website quotes $35 per. and now i've contributed here.
TOO many websites, too little time.

I believe the reason given for charging is to keep the spam out. I'm sure there are other ways to do that. Why I am not against someone charging for a service, I think $35 is a little too much. My opinion, and I know what that's worth.
The site had begun to die on the vine here as of late and unless it comes with some real serious enhancements I believe the fee system will be a coffin nail.

My understanding is that Johan felt he was giving away too much free technical advice via the forums. So much that he felt with his busy schedule (and the fact that it's his livelyhood to begin with) that he should be compensated.

The spam excuse just doesn't fit. Charge $5 if you want to make it harder for spammers to join and post. $35 though rings of type club dues, which I think is fine from a mechanic's point of view. I wouldn't give out web development advice everyday for free. The only downside is that it stifles the open nature of the forum.

So, should I charge for the hours and hundreds of tech. questions I've answered on the MM chatroom. At $35 per reader, I'd be wealthy. I wonder who's been reading my mail and where does it go.

I can say without a doubt that most of the information I gleaned from the maulemods forum did not come from Johan. The most valuable thing I got from the forum was the open nature of the communication between all of the pilots. The two contributors I went out of my way to read were Jeremy and Greg, and I do not remember the last time I read a post from Johan.

On the other hand visiting the forums enticed me to regularly look at some of Johan's modifications. It also regularly exposed me to other products he had for sale. I hope all goes well for him, but I will probably look elsewhere for the dialogue and information that pilots seem eager to share with other earnest and interested pilots.

I hope that doesn't mean you're thinkin' about charging me for all those hours I spend bending your ear on the phone, the bill would be astronomical. :)

You'll be able to read on Johan's forum for free, but posting's gonna cost ya.

Real pilots fly airplanes built in Moultrie.
Real good pilots fly airplanes that are yellow and smell like poison.

I wish we could tie the other two Maule sites with a Maule column on this and I would only have to go to one forum to help out, or vice versa.

Unless of course you were going for a witty effect. ;)

MAULE FORUM

Zane,

great Forum!
Can we start a MAULE FORUM under the Aircraft section? Or where do you suggest to do so?

I'll put it up for vote. We have people of a differing opinion on the subject.
