Several of us were perched in our customary judges seats, faithfully performing our duties as the self designated Yellow Pine Chapter of the BackCountryPilot Takeoff and Landing Critique Institute of Advanced HyperCritical Studies when he came in and we witnessed most of the unfortunate event. Various portions of the event were missed by several judges as all scattered like quail looking for shelter and safety behind Bruce's 182.
Long and the short of it was, it was a high and fast approach that ended in a porpoised landing including three quick prop strikes and a collapse of the nose gear/firewall. Once the nosegear and firewall gave way, loss of directional control put him into a drainage ditch and small trees on the west side of the runway.
Very unfortunate event. Beautiful 182 with a lot of nice mods. I felt really bad for the owner who is a really nice guy. Good news is, nobody was hurt and bent metal can always be straightened or replaced.
Hopefully all will turn out good for him and his insurance company will make it right.
