Maverick gas stations in the west aviation link

I just found out, while redeeming my latest batch of "bonus points" from buying lots of diesel fuel and coffee at the many different Maverick convenience stores in my area, that the founder of the chain is Reuel Call. The same guy who started the Callair airplane factory in Afton Wy., now morphed into the Husky company. While he died in 2002 at the age of 92, I still find that interesting, and will continue to give my fuel money to them, especially as they have the lowest prices around. If he was still alive I'd ask him to get some E-0 at the pumps. His obit is a pretty good read, he was quite the go getter to say the least. I think he would have approved of my ski plane landing Easter Sunday at 8600' a few miles from the plant.

Thank you much Mr. Courrier.

Always appreciate history - Even if Maverick was my friends competitor
in McCall - He owned the Shell station and store for a few years.

Then tore down the first bar I ever went into in McCall and made
it a small restaurant back in the early 20??s. Believe the bar was associated with the Timberman(s) lodge across the street where I was staying in late Oct. of 83.

Nuther story to finish

I used to plow snow at the Maverick in McCall back in the winter of 88/89. When I wasn't plowing snow or sking Brundage Mtn, I was hanging out at the airport. Mike Dorris let me fly the J-3 on skis a few times and I just made some screen captures today from a video my friend made. I rode on the mail run a couple of times too in the 185.

Their stations around here all sell Clean (Ethanol Free) 88 for a fair price. I call it Maverick Mogas.

They bought a Citation CJ3 a few years ago, it parks in the hangar next to ours and flies a good bit.

CallAir A9-A or A9-B were the most balanced and easiest tailwheel airplanes I ever flew Ag or people plane. I think it was the ribbed control surfaces. Except fully loaded, it was like hydraulic controls in a Huey. The Pawnee, almost identical in every other way, was a beast with flat control surfaces. Air Tractor, even with servos, was not as sweet.

180 Marty

It was Dorris's "polished" 170 that made me a Wannabe an owner of one.

Ended up buying mine from Jim Tracy out front of Hangar A in McCall.

Maverik (no "c") started in Wyoming where I grew up. My mom worked for them for 37 years. The grandsons to Reuel sold Maverik about 4-5 years ago to Crystal Call who is the daughter of Jay Call (Flying J truck stops). Jay died in a plane crash several years ago. Crystal's husband was my hangar neighbor for awhile and he owned a Jet Prop. Maverik owned a Malibu and a Meridian. They traded the Malibu for a Citation Mustang. When Crystal bought the company. She sold the Meridian and Mustang and bought the CJ3 they have today. I did my IFR rating with her brother who owns a Cirrus and one of the grandson's that owned Maverik before had a TBM and recently traded it for a Honda Jet. Lot's of flying in that family for sure! Great company and great people.

Wow.... I had never noticed there is NO C in Maverik! Thanks for that history. They get all my diesel and coffee business.

A few years back I did the crane work on what is the most expensive house in my county. Behind the ridge across the valley from my place, in Arbon Valley, It was a huge house and "barn" (guest quarters above, real nice guest quarters) in a very rural remote part of the county, and it was built as I recall, by a guy connected with the Flying J in some fashion. Others own it now, I check in every now and them and eyeball it as I fly over, and rarely see anyone there. I remember it had a mechanical room worthy of a commercial shopping center, one feature being a 10,000 gallon water tank up higher, kept filled by the well, with a resultant pressure of over 100 lbs at the bottom, Reduced in psi of course but the idea was he wanted all 5 or 6 guest suites in the barn to be able to have full hot showers all at once, plus the main house. A huge backup generator of course. The only house I've ever worked on that had trusses 12" on center. I worked there two days just setting windows with the crane and a suction cup thingie. It was a 15 or 16 million buck house I heard. Didn't know of the J and Maverik connect, interesting.
