McCall to minan lodge

Got to McCall last night amid many rainshowers and some lightning.Cavanaugh bay was clear but the closer I got to McCall the worse the weather got.soon after landing the real stiff came down. Mike Doris let us sleep in his hanger, never having met us before was a great act of faith on his part.thinking of going over to minan lodge in the morning.never having been there before would like to know a good approach.I thought going to the town of minan and follow the drainage south.there seems to be several and not sure I would recognize the right one.or go direct and drop in.any suggestions?

Re: McCall to minan lodge

Search this and the www.maulepilots.org sites for Minam lodge. I know there are at least three movies of the approach.

Unless things have changed you want to land upstream a little long to avoid a rough area where there is some rocks in a washout towards the downstream end of the strip.

Someone who has been in there more recently would be a good shot.

Island Flyer on the maule site has a nice movie and there was another on either this or the Maule site showing the upstream approach.

Very nice place. Have fun.

Also Red's is just upstream from Minam, but last report I saw the grass was a bit long.

Re: McCall to minan lodge

We were camped out at Red's Horse Ranch for 3 days, got home Sunday, 15th. BAD THUNDER STORMS UP THERE- GOT SOAKED 2 OUT OF 3 DAYS! Do not get caught in those canyons with thunderstorms, like the fellow did up at Moose Creek a couple of weeks ago. With that said, both strips Reds and Minam are both mowed and in fair shape, stay in the center mowed area watch for ditches in tall grass. I don't know your skill level, but if the weather is not good and you have not been in there before, I would stay out! It gets narrow in there, do not fly up the wrong drainage it could end very badly! If you land at Reds, touch down on the strip just after the barn, as there is a horse trail cutting across the strip. The horse trail groove is pretty deep, if you have small tires. There is no go around at Reds! If you land at Minam, you could do a go around and/or land at Reds. You can walk between the strips as they are less than a mile apart.

Re: McCall to minan lodge

Left reds this a.m.and last night we saw the most intense lightning storm complete with theloudest rain, thunder, hail and everything possible that could fall from the sky. The wind did not want to take a back seat, tried to take all our gear and smash it to the earth. One strike seemed only a couple hundred feet from us.really got our attention.
Red'S is in very good condition, likewise minam lodge. Must email the lodge if u want dinner and they plan only to stay open thru august.. Construction worker goes on thru October.I
