McCauley 7649 vs MT?

I am overhauling my Franklin 165 and while I am at it I am interested in getting better take off and climb performance than my current McCauley Aluminum 7649 prop. The Stinson TCDS allow for any fixed pitch wood prop between 74-76" that stays within static limits, which naturally leads me to be interested in a fixed pitch MT.

Sadly I can't find a STC for either a larger diameter prop, or a constant speed for the Franklin 165, so those options are out unless someone knows of one hiding somewhere :)

I'd like to hear some first hand experience with MT FIXED pitch props, I know everyone raves about the constant speed, but I am stuck with fixed pitch. How much difference am I likely to see by switching to an equivalent MT? I know it will be smoother and lighter, and that is appealing.

I'll be that guy. Why not a Sensenich wood prop? They are running them on supercubs in AK and having great results. I have a customer that plans on putting one on his soon as its approved in Canada. I'd look at them closely.

Are you referring to the traditional wood props with brass leading edges or their new composite covered wood props? In regards to the latter, I didn't think you could get those with metal leading edge reinforcement, which matters to me for off airport work.

I'm definitely open to anything that is 8 bolt on a 5.25"BC.

I'm quite sure they have a stainless LE on the new ones. AK guys are running them off airport with good results.
Might want to talk with Rick Church about MTs. He and I have similar views on them.

A guy up here is running a McCauley 8042 on his Franklin powered Sedan. Don't know if an STC exists for the Stinson.

Share your opinion on the MT, we're all friends here ;)

I looked for a STC for the 8042 on the Sedan, so far fruitless. That plane may very well be on a field approval for all I know. But it is nice to know that someone is doing it.

Meh. I'll be burned at the stake by the lovers. Rick will gladly share his opinions with you if you call him, or you can PM me. I also have a guy who is pretty good at LSTCs if you want to try to get an 8042 on the plane. But IMO the Sensenich is the way to go...

Re: McCauley 7649 vs MT?

FWIW as a follow up, MT told me on the phone today that MT is no longer making fixed pitch props.
