McKenzie Bridge Airport (00S) Work Party – Update 2.0

Image

To help us plan, please register and submit the Volunteer Liability Form before 25 May: http://theraf.org/civicrm/event/register?id=403&reset=1

The Oregon Department of Aviation (ODA) is under pressure to close and divest the State of non-revenue producing airports. Unfortunately, this means the futures of many remote airports are threatened. We pilots need to get involved and demonstrate to the State that these airports are important to us.

To that end, the Recreational Aviation Foundation (RAF) has been collaborating with ODA to hold a volunteer work party at McKenzie Bridge State Airport (00S) on Saturday 02 June 2018. The objectives would be to demonstrate our commitment to the airfield by making it safer and more attractive for the recreational aviation community. Volunteers are needed to help accomplish several maintenance tasks, and to show ODA that the airport is important to us.

Spouses, kids, and dogs are all welcome to participate. Volunteers are welcome to camp on the airfield beginning Friday afternoon. Please refer to the attached site drawing for information on access.

If you plan to fly in to help, please arrive Friday night, or before 09:00 on Saturday. Once we start operating the tractors to repair the airstrip surface, it will be difficult to accommodate a lot of aircraft arrivals. If you camp on the airfield overnight, please use the indicated area.

As an added bonus, the Eugene VW Bus Club will be showing a Godzilla movie on Saturday night! Bring your own chairs and refreshments. We’ll have a BBQ potluck on Saturday afternoon after the work is done. Tony Hann from Infinite Air in Albany will be firing up the grill, so bring a dish to share and your favorite beverage. Please stop at S12 and buy some fuel to thank Tony.

It will be helpful if you could please register before 25 May so we can plan. In addition, the ODA requires submission of the attached Volunteer Liability Form prior to starting work. Please complete and forward directly to ODA as indicated on the bottom of the form.

Come to show your support for recreational aviation and make some new pilot friends. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly.

Thanks in advance for your support.

Re: McKenzie Bridge Airport (00S) Work Party – advance notic

Thank you Richard Mayes.

I like Mc Kenzie Bridge. I have camped there 3 times over the years. This deal with the ODA is so disheartening. The Oregon Department of Aviation (ODA) is under pressure to close and divest the State of non-revenue producing airports. The pressure is from the ODA it's self. I want to keep this positive, so I won't rant too much.

I am involved in the fight to keep Pacific City opened and under state control. I keep a big tractor and brush hog at my home there and mow the grass for the state.

I don't want to say this, BUT, the state is not fully truthful with the steak holders. Yes they lie to us. So we will have an up hill battle to keep
Mc Kinzie open. The guys in the area better be ready to push back by going to meetings and media. This work party is a good thing to show the state we are watching them and we care.

The state has already given Beaver Marsh, and Lake Billy Chinook state away. They are talking about divesting its self of Cascade Locks.

If the wx is flyable I'll probably show with my Stihl line trimmer, chain saw, and hedge trimmer. It would be 332 miles for me to tow a tractor there and back, so that won't happen.

I am assuming the over run area is full of volunteer saplings? Is it?
I assume some of these are large enough a chain saw will be needed?
The last time I was there the volunteer saplings along the south side of the runway were out of control. I'm guessing the state never took them down? Did they?

Come on guys, who else will come? There is a good chance the state will give us this airport if we want it. The deal is it has to be kept open for 20 years as a public airport. You get all the liability and maintenance. Sweet deal you say??

Cheers...Rob

Re: McKenzie Bridge Airport (00S) Work Party – advance notic

If my work schedule allows I will try to be there. I have worked fires out of that airport several times. Its a key location to base helicopters for wildfires as there is little other option in that area. It needs to stay open for that reason and many others.

The Oregon Department of Aviation (ODA) is under pressure to close and divest the State of non-revenue producing airports. Unfortunately, this means the futures of many remote airports are threatened. We recreational pilots need to get involved and demonstrate to the State that these airports are important to us.

To that end, the Recreational Aviation Foundation has been collaborating with ODA to hold a volunteer work party at McKenzie Bridge Airport (00S) on Saturday 02 June 2018. The objectives would be to demonstrate our commitment to the airfield by making it safer and more attractive for the recreational aviation community.

The general tasks to be accomplished are:

1) Repair damage to the airfield surface caused by rodents and wildlife. There are many gopher holes that can be easily filled with a shovel full of dirt. The larger holes where coyotes have tried to dig out the gophers will require more effort. We currently have commitments from three volunteers to bring tractors with buckets and drags to help move and smooth the dirt. We will require many folks with shovels and garden rakes to distribute the dirt and fill the holes.

2) Cut down the weeds at the tie-down and camping area. This should be a relatively minor effort. We will require a couple of folks with string trimmers to accomplish this.

3) Paint the runway markers and the windsock indicator. Have you got any kids/grandkids with time on their hands? Can you volunteer to supply some surplus paint, brushes, and unharnessed energy? We need probably 4 to 5 gallons of white paint and one gallon of signal orange paint, several brushes, buckets, willing hands, etc.

4) Install a new, taller windsock pole. Paul Ehrhardt is supplying the pole.

5) Relocate a couple of existing signs.

6) We would like to clear the brush from the over-run area at the West end of the airfield, and along the South side of the runway. This comprises mostly small pine trees, 3 to 5 feet tall, Broom, and other brush.
Removing this brush this will be a big chore using chainsaws and labor. A large tractor with a brush-hog would make this task easier. Can anyone help obtain this equipment for a day?

7) The pit toilet appears to be almost a lost cause. Its condition is poor and the door has been ripped off the frame. Any suggestions are welcome.

We will have a potluck meal early Saturday evening. Bring food to share and your choice of beverage. Some ladies have volunteered to help manage this – more are welcome. Tony Hann from Infinite Air Center at Albany (S12) is providing a BBQ grill for our use on Saturday - please stop at S12 and buy some fuel to thank Tony!

You can camp overnight on the field. Alternatively, you can stay at one of the many lodges and B&Bs along the McKenzie River. There are a lot of diversions in the area to keep you entertained for the rest of the weekend. For more info on the area, check out: http://visitmckenzieriver.com/oregon/

If you plan to fly in to help, please arrive Friday night, or before 09:00 on Saturday. Once we start operating the tractors to repair the airstrip surface, it will be difficult to accommodate a lot of aircraft arrivals. If you camp on the airfield overnight, please use the West end of the airstrip so we can work in the usual tie-down area at the east End on Saturday.

Please feel free to provide feedback if you have any ideas on how to make this activity most successful. Your thoughts and support will be most welcome. Further details will follow closer to the date.

Should be fine. No NOTAMS. Land east, take off west.

I was there just recently. The grass is short, but the airstrip surface is a bit rough because of the rodent activity. However, it is indeed perfectly useable for most GA aircraft.

As Rob points out, this is a one way in and one way out airport for most pilots. Land to the East and depart to the West. There are very tall trees adjacent to the airport, particularly at the West end, and high terrain all around. Be wary of wildlife, people or vehicles on the airstrip. Overfly the airport and take a good look before landing - no straight in approaches! Announce your presence and intentions on 122.90.

Re: McKenzie Bridge Airport (00S) Work Party – Update 2.0

Best way to update this information is to update the original thread with the EDIT button, then reply to it so it's bumped to the top. That way we don't have two (or more) threads with possibly conflicting information.

I will do it for you this time, but please keep that in mind.

Thanks.

Really curious how the Eugene VW Bus Club got involved with supporting an airstrip well outside of town.

Re: McKenzie Bridge Airport (00S) Work Party – Update 2.0

Dear Oregon BCP friends. I'm not seeing much interest here. This is the time to step up.

If you want to see our back country strips remain, it is up to you and me.

If you don't step up who will? If not now, when?

When these strips are gone it will be to late.

BTW, this will be fun. See old friends, make some new friends, camp fire, pot luck, movie, whats not to like here?

Thank you Richard Mayes and RAF.

Come on, who else will come?

Cheers...Rob
